Default Elite player salary vs sponsorship & commercial income

All this Johnny Hockey contract speculation got me thinking. Why do elite players hold out on NHL contracts when they still make a boatload of cash from other deals? I don't know how much a player can make outside the rink, but I know it can be substantial. So, why do players ( or agents ) push for max dollars from their teams? It's a gamble that could backfire huge! Players making a million more than they should, become whipping boys and targets of the fan bases. Why not take a bit less, like Brodie for example, and keep everyone loving you. Then make extra from sponsors and commercials, and feed from the positive vibes of fans. I get why they go for the most cash but I'm curious if it really pays off in the long run. That, on top of having better players on your team, should work out to a better career in the end. Thoughts?

At the end of the day, players have a small window and limited opportunities to make guaranteed income deals. I would assume that elite players aren't encouraged to take pay cuts by the PA either as it drives the market value of comparable players.

NHL players don't make much from endorsement deals. Article is a bit dated but point still stands:

Sidney Crosby is the most at $4.5 mil. Toews at $1.2 mil at #4. The rest is sub million.

Ya I see the risk involved. But I love it when a player signs a "fair" seeming deal. Even a guy like Gio might end up tarnishing what he's done in a Flames uniform because of the length of the contract.

I'm a bit surprised by those numbers. Would've thought there was more potential there. Especially for a guy like Johnny Hockey who owns his nickname.
Crosby is on a really good contract considering his production and what he brings to the team and franchise. I'd hope Johnny would see this. He will have all American hockey fans watching him. Much like Kane.

Gaudreau owns the "Johnny Hockey" trademark, but if I remember correctly, he only trademarked it so others couldn't profit off his monicker.

Furthermore, how many "Johnny Hockey" shirts do we see out there? I don't live in Calgary, but I doubt there are many.

I know revenue from jersey sales get split between the owners and the PA, but I don't think specific players get an addition cut from their own jersey sales.

Which means, Gaudreau is not set to make significant money through endorsements. The real money for hockey players will - at least for the immediate future - be in contracts.

The AAV of the contract is good but it is only because of the back diving at the end. His contract was one of the last ones signed before the new CBA which disallowed this.

Here is the year-by-year breakdown of Sidney Crosby's contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins:
  • 2013-14 — $12 million
  • 2014-15 — $12 million
  • 2015-16 — $12 million
  • 2016-17 — $10.9 million
  • 2017-18 — $10.9 million
  • 2018-19 — $10 million
  • 2019-20 — $9 million
  • 2020-21 — $9.6 million
  • 2021-22 — $9 million
  • 2022-23 — $3 million
  • 2023-24 — $3 million
  • 2024-25 — $3 million
So if you get rid of the last 3 years, or add the $9 million to the first 9 years his AAV is over $11.5 million. He is paid at the top of the market as he should be.
