Default Zetterberg out of World Cup, Backlund replaces!

According to Swedens most prominent sport newspaper, Henrik Zetterberg is going to miss the tournament because of injury and Backlund is called in to be his replacement!

It was a bit of a surprise to me that Rakell was called in before him when Steen was ruled out, and even though this really is a setback for Team Sweden, I'm really glad that he finally got a spot!

How do you think this will affect Team Swedens chances in the tournament? How will Backlund be used? With whom will he be playing with?

Here is the article, in swedish:

Zetterberg is getting up there in age, Backlund hasn't even hit his prime yet. I personally don't think it will hurt the team.

I do agree though, it should be a nice boost to the start of his season, barring injury of course.

With Sedin and Bäckström as obvious choices, and Kruger as a defensive specialist, do you think Backlund get to play as a center?

I think Backlund is the better option for third line centre than Kruger. He is just as good defensively and has better offensive upside. Although would be interesting to see how Backlund would work out on the wing

Good to hear Backs was one of the many flames (Gui, Brodie, Hamilton) that were snubbed for this tournament. Glad to see he will be playing

Definitely my biggest concern. But he seems to have gotten past the injuries the past few years. He no longer seems like he's made of glass, which is a great relief. There were a few years there where he'd get injured if you looked at him the wrong way.

Hopefully he doesn't miss half the season with some obscure abdomen injury sustained during the tourney.

It's good to see a Flame get recognized but Backlund is injury prone and I'd rather he didn't have these extra games to play.

Nice for Backlund but with this short of notice before the World Cup training camps and tournament begins this has injury written all over it

Backlund could just as likely get hurt in training camp.

Big game experience and being in a best on best is exactly what he need to take his game up a level IMO. I'll call it right now, Backlund has his best season ever.

It can be a nice experience for Backlund, I am hoping that team North America and team Sweden are out of this tournament by September 22(if I am not wrong, 4 teams will be out of this tournament by the start of training camps), get Monahan, Johnny and Backlund, some games and back for the training camp.

Excellent news. This has got to be a big confidence boost for Backlund. He's never had a lot of swagger to his game, except for the last year and a half or so. Confidence is a tricky thing: Hard to acquire, easy to lose, extremely difficult to get back. Being named to a national team for this kind of showcase tournament has got to feel good, and if he does reasonably well competing against the world's best, that will only lead to good things for him.

Be prepared for a career year from Backlund.
