Datsyuk announces he will leave the NHL and return to Russia
per Friedman on HNIC
he said that it would be family reasons. detroit and Datsyuk won't comment.
because he is a 35+ contract his contract ($7.5 mil AAV) would continue to count against the cap if he were to retire

If true, we should all keep an eye on Detroit's remaining games.
There'll never be another player like Datsyuk in the NHL. He could control the puck like no player I've ever seen, and has made some very good goaltenders and defensemen look like fringe NHL'ers. We all say that Johnny is a helluva puck-handler (and he is), but Datsyuk was just on another level. He had enough raw skill and talent to beat anyone in the league.
Thank you for displaying your immense talent, Pavel. You had an unbelievable career. First-ballot hall-of-famer for sure.

Sadly I don't think so smiggy77. One of the best in the last decade, always fun to watch, I know I'll miss him if he goes to the KHL.

Wow. That is stunning news. That pretty much cuts the heart out of Detroit's core (even though Datsyuk has been declining a little). They have some nice complementary players, but they are really growing short of elite players. I wonder how long before they start a full tear down rebuild.

Wow, that's a bit surprising. He could play for a few more years, but I understand if it's about the family, especially if he's leaving that much money on the table. What a great talent to watch over the years.

really a remarkable career.
Over 1100 games as a Wing.....just dont see a guy stay with one team that long very often anymore.

It's been pretty well known for a couple years he was going to leave Detroit and play in Russia before his contract was up. But it's still sad to know a player like him is going to be leaving.
The end of another Red Wing Era. Detroit has had so many. The Federov era. The Yzerman era. Lidstrom era. Datsyuk era. Soon the Zetterberg era. So many eras.

I would be sad to see him go for sure..

Sucks for the Wings if he retires, with his contract counting against the cap, though I'm sure they will find a way to get out of it.

His agent didn't deny the report.
Ansar Khan @AnsarKhanMLive
Pavel Datsyuk's agent, Dan Milstein, was asked about @FriedgeHNIC report that Datsyuk might return to Russia after this season. In email ..

Milstein on Datsyuk: "Pavel is concentrating on helping his team to make the playoffs and winning another Stanley Cup for the Red Wings ...

Milstein (cont.): "Pavel also has one more year left on his NHL contract. We will sit down with Ken Holland at the conclusion of the season

That just seals it. If he was for sure returning, it'd be a flat-out no.
There's definitely some chance he'll retire.

Imagine the bidding war if the Wings had made him available at the deadline.

That's too bad. I can't imagine anyone saying they don't like Datsyuk. There was a span of about 2 years around '07 where he was the best hockey player on Earth, and arguably the most skilled guy with the puck ever. Certainly will never be another guy like him.

Why would they move one of their greats when they're trying to make the playoffs? Makes zero sense. Plus, he's got a NMC, doubt he would've waived it.

Is it the full cap hit for one year because this contract was since the lockout (instead of recapture penalty)? Can they trade the cap hit (Toronto)?
