I can't help it. I always think of this quote from Getty when his name comes up, because it was so insanely stupid for a man in his position to make, albeit it somewhat hilarious to me:

The writer had referred to the Premier as a "closet seat-belt abuser," to which Mr. Getty replied, "I maybe whack my kids, beat my wife, but I've never abused a seat belt in my life."

The world was a completely different place only a short time ago.

I grew up thinking that Getty was an epitome of careless government spending, disrespecting taxpayers' money and of being in cahoots with big business. In retrospect, he's got to lead the Province during possibly the worst time in modern Alberta history. But his means and intentions were good and consistent, actually. Provide funds and loan guarantees to the industries that struggle, try to help by intervening on industry's behalf. He's got a lot of flack for the Gainers failure; but he did try to save the company and keep people employed. Even the NovaTel affair, although convoluted, was rooted in good intentions to start privatization and competition process in the telephone business. I mean, in everything that had become more expensive since the 80's, international calling is probably the ONLY thing that's cheaper today than in those days of $5.50/minute from 8 am to 5 pm... Anyway, it was difficult to shine between Lougheed and Klein but he did what he could and he did not suck at it either.

Getty gets a lot of bad press that is rather undeserved. He inherited a deficit and saw a collapse in oil similar to what we see today. He wasn't spend crazy, deficits just made it seem that way (I'd say he was cut-averse as opposed to spend happy). He basically just tried to keep spending in line with previous governments.

He may not have been an iconic leader, but he was a good intentioned civil servant who was given the wheel at an unlucky time.

RIP.

Reading that article gives me a different take on the man. He was put in a terrible situation and tried to help the economy. The thing I remember the most though has to do with this.

Quote:
He came under heavy criticism around that time when he was photographed on a golf course after an assistant said that he was "working out of office."
IIRC it wasn't just any golf course and it didn't happen only once but when a crises occurred, he'd be found on a golf course in Palm Springs while promising to return shortly. Maybe just bad luck all around with the bad economy and his ill timed golf excursions.
