Gift for a 16 yr old that likes reading.
A close family friend is having surgery.
He is 16 yrs old, and will be laid up for a bit. He is a good kid and has come out to help coach my boy's hockey and lacrosse.
We want to get him a present, but have coming up empty on ideas.
Thoughts/suggestions from the collective?

Yikes, hope all is good.
A 3DS would probably be pretty sweet in those circumstances.

Depends on how much you want to spend, but if he is laid up for a bit, something remote controlled might be cool.
You are nice for wanting to do something for him.

Thanks, but it is really him that is nice. He plays AAA hockey in Red Deer, yet makes time to come out to help with my boy's team. Not only does he come out, he prepares drills and runs them and gives constructive feedback to the boys.
He has also been involved with lacrosse for the boy doing the same thing he does for hockey. Nice to see a kids like that involved in the community.

My suggestion would have been a PSP ($200) or a 3DS like what Kswiss suggested.

Depends. How much are you willing to spend?
PSPs and DS's are a no-go. The kid's sixteen, he doesn't want that. Get him a bluetooth speaker.

He could use the handheld gaming device on roadtrips with his team.

I am thinking The Scorpion might be correct on this, I can't see him playing a 3DS, but I might blow it by his parents.
I came up with the iTune card.

Good idea, nothing wrong with that gift. He... he does have an iPhone, right? Or does he have an Android?

iPhone.
I was also thinking about a book or books hockey or lacrosse related.
Maybe improve/expand his mind a bit.

Solid.
In terms of a book about hockey, well, there's always By The Numbers by Scott Morrsion which breaks down the best players by every jersey number. What's his favourite hockey team? If it's the Flames or Oilers, I highly reccomend Mark Spector's new book The Battle of Alberta.

He might be a Leaf's fan like his old man, but not sure so I like you jersey book idea.

OK. Leafs-wise - since I am a closet Leafs fan - I'd recommend 'The Best of Down Goes Brown' by Sean McIndoe. Hilarious read, very good stuff.

Books are lame.
3DS is rad. If he's laid up and bored, Mario will be fun. I'd say he may be too old if he was 30, but he's still a kid and would enjoy the DS.

There isn't one 16-year-old on all of planet earth at any time in history that would prefer Mark Spector's The Battle of Alberta over a DS. Unless you're just punking this kid for April 1 or something.

If you really want to buy him a rad gaming system, shell out for an old iPod Touch. But really, the kid already has an iPhone, what does he have to gain by owning a 3DS or an iPod?
Phone accessories are super neat. Is he big into fitness? Buy him a Pebble Watch. I own one, they're rad.

Clearly you have never played a 3DS if you have to ask what it has over an iPod for games. It's infinitely better.
