Default Short Term Disability Question

Hey CP,

Been searching for this online and have seen various answers so I was hoping someone here could help me. My Doctor recently suggested I go on STD for a few weeks as I have had some personal issues which have occurred over the last year/year and a half. My current job right now is extremely stressful and a few weeks off would be good to reenergize myself and my mind.

My question is, While on short term disability can I apply for new jobs? The main reason for my stress I believe is due to my current job. What happens if I find new employment and accept an offer while under STD from my current employer?

Appreciate any help.

Cheers.

Every std contract is different. You'll have to read your specific contract, as any benefits you're entitled to arise from that contract.

Unless you're talking about EI std. EI will do everything to encourage you to find a new job, but then subtract amounts you make from your payments.

Thanks for the response. I'm referring to employer STD. I'll take a look at my contract, I assume I can call my company benefits provider and ask them this directly in confidence?

Call the provider and ask them (not the actual company rep). Also keep in mind that you likely won't be approved for STD benefits right away, that process in itself can take 2-3 weeks - the time off you can have, but you won't get the $$. If you lost coverage prior to approval, that might be a different conversation.

I've honestly not heard of this scenario ever happening where a company claws back STD/LTD benefits after leaving a company. If anything, they should be happy to have you off their books.
