Default Alberta Electricity and Gas Providers - Who To Pick?

I just bought a new house, and am debating who to buy power from. Seems like there are a handful of options in Alberta but Enmax (EasyMAX), EPCOR and Direct Energy are the top three players.

Does anyone have any insight into which one to pick and why?

What area are you planning on purchasing your property in? Choosing your provider(s) is very dependent on that, and who the regulated retailers are.

This thread is a good read:

Myself, I'm with Enmax. I was with Direct Energy until they pulled a scam on me. Enamx is a slightly cheaper if you have both gas and electricity. It's also owned by the city, so any profits benefit us directly.

Stay away from Direct Energy. "They pulled a scam on me" is pretty much their business model in its entirety.

Saw this 3 days ago, I'll just leave it here.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/edmont...ints-1.3156837

Chernihovsky contacted CBC because he hadn't received a refund and he was still getting calls from the collection agency. He thinks the company just wants him to go away.

"They just hope that one day I'll decide I'm tired from all this...and I'll give up," he said.

Chernihovsky isn't alone. The Utilities Consumer Advocate, a branch of Service Alberta, confirms it has received hundreds of complaints about Direct Energy since the company opened a new billing and call centre in Guatemala City late last year.

When CBC first raised the issue with the government in March, a spokesman said the consumer advocate was "reassured" the issues were being resolved after meeting with Direct Energy's senior managers.
That doesn't sit well with Debbie Saidman, another Direct Energy customer.

"I think reassurance from the company that's giving the service isn't adequate," she said.

Epcor is owned by the City of Edmonton, so any of their profits benefit Edmonton directly.

Do with that information what you will.

Privatized utility systems are awful. Pay to the source.

I only like Enmax. I can view my bills/balance online and Direct Energy only sends by mail.

As someone who usually rents, I have a question. I'm paying the utilities on my rental and the agent made me sign a document that says I will use Direct Energy for gas and Enmax for everything else. Is this legit? Am I able to move from Direct to Enmax at any time for my gas?
