I got a jury summons in the mail. I have a vacation already booked that starts a couple days after my summons date. There doesn't seem to be anything in the exemption list that mentions future vacations.
Will I have the ability on the day of my summons to state why I would need to be excused or do I have to reschedule my vacation?
...and I'm sure it'll work. But it's a terrible thing to do to get out of civic service. Undue hardship on work or your family might be a more civil way of doing it.

I've had one two months ago and was going away on holidays. Make a call to the number shown on the summons. Tell the clerk that you are going to be away from Calgary. She will tell you which form to fill and fax to her. I did not even have to attach my travel itinerary. Two weeks later you will receive an release note in the mail.

Haha I know, I'm joking even literally saying "anything racist" would probably work.
Personally I'd go on the "I LOVE crime dramas" route.
I got a jury summons once, they mailed it to my old address though and it took about 6 months to find its way to me, never heard anything else about it.
Maybe try talking about jury nullification (edit - in a roundabout way)? I think it's likely they won't ask you to act as a juror if you imply to some level that you might not vote purely on the evidence.
