Default Bruins Spend the Weekend Trading

Lots of trades. After losing to the Bolts I had to make a decision - bulk up and try to get into the last playoff spot or dump my aging assets and salaries. I decided to dump. But now that all the trades are done I think I may actually have a better chance of making the playoffs if my D can step up and play over their heads. I guess we'll see.

So here are the deals and a short breakdown behind my reasoning for each.

To Boston:
Pirri, Brandon (LW) AHL
Lucia, Mario (LW) AHL
Kunyk, Cody (RW) AHL

To Florida:
Orpik, Brooks (D) NHL
$5.50 million

- I wasn't too happy with Orpik's play and was happy to be rid of him. It isn't a coincidence he is was the first to go. Great package of youth back, always been a Pirri fan, Kunyk played his first NHL game this year and Lucia is a 2nd round pick playing well at Notre Dame.

Eaves, Patrick (RW) was placed on waivers and released. No room.

To Boston:
Horton, Nathan (C) NHL
Barberio, Mark (D) AHL
Lashoff, Brian (D) AHL

To Winnipeg:
Hejda, Jan (D) NHL
Pyatt, Tom (C) NHL
$0.25 million

- This was an easy trade to make. If I recall, this was the original offer from the Jets. Hejda is old and was a UFA signing and Pyatt left for Europe this year. Horton could have some value at the trade deadline, Barberio is a blue chip Dman and Lashoff is only 23 and already playing on the Wings in the NHL. I'm really happy with the return on this trade.

To Boston:
Brewer, Eric (D) NHL
Elliott, Stefan (D) AHL
Pageau, Jean-Gabriel (C) NHL
Smith, Colin (C) AHL
Merzlikins, Elvis (G) AHL

To Florida:
Joensuu, Jesse (LW) AHL
Deschamp, Nic (C) AHL
Cormier, Patrice (C) AHL
Garrison, Jason (D) NHL
$2.00 million

- This one is a little merky. Basically Florida wanted Garrison. He cobbled together an offer, I liked it, and added Joensuu, Deschamp and Cormier to make room on my AHL roster. Brewer has a managable salary, Pageau, Smith and Elliot are all so-so prospects - Id hope one turns into an NHLer. Merzlikins is an interesting player and I am happy to have him. I love those Latvians!

To Boston:
Hickey, Thomas (D) NHL

To Blue Jackets:
Gunnarsson, Carl (D) NHL
$0.25 million

- I had tons of interest in Gunnersson. I think at one time I had pms with 5 differnet GMs at the same time trying to make deals for him. Who knew. In the end I took Hickey, I thought it was best to not add two or three lesser assets at this point, my rosters were filling up quick. Hes younger and is having a good NHL year so why not.

To Boston:
Jagr, Jaromir (RW) NHL

To Blue Jackets:
Legwand, David (C) NHL
$1.00 million

- Well, this is a weird one. No one had asked about Legwand all weekend. He is having a tough NHL year, is pretty old, and I just signed him as a UFA to 3 years at $7.0 mill per year 1 way - a guaranteed albatross in a couple of years. So, the offer was there and I decided to take the opportunity to dump Legwand. Jagr has better ratings (73 OV) and I should be able to move him before the trade deadline. Or maybe I'll keep him if Im still in the playoff picture. We will see.

To Boston:
Kristo, Danny (RW) AHL
Kruger, Marcus (C) NHL
Matteau, Stefan (C) ECHL
Corrado, Frankie (D) AHL
$0.50 million

To Flyers:
Ekholm, Mattias (D) NHL

- Now this is a trade I absolutely did NOT want to make. But in the end I felt the package of decent young assets was just too much not to take. Kristo may be a bust or may be a superstar, kind of a fun player to see how he will develop. Kruger is good depth with some upside. Matteau I think is a blue chip and Corrado will likely make the NHL as well. So I'll have to wait a couple of years but these are all good assets. Will I regret this trade? Probably.

Gorges is still on the block but I might just keep him. I want to see how this new team plays.

So the final tally:

IN:
Hickey, Thomas (D) NHL
Jagr, Jaromir (RW) NHL
Pirri, Brandon (LW) AHL
Horton, Nathan (C) NHL
Brewer, Eric (D) NHL
Kruger, Marcus (C) NHL
Lashoff, Brian (D) AHL
Barberio, Mark (D) AHL
Matteau, Stefan (C) ECHL
Corrado, Frankie (D) AHL
Merzlikins, Elvis (G) AHL
Kristo, Danny (RW) AHL
Lucia, Mario (LW) AHL
Kunyk, Cody (RW) AHL
Elliott, Stefan (D) AHL
Pageau, Jean-Gabriel (C) NHL
Smith, Colin (C) AHL
$0.50 million

OUT:
Orpik, Brooks (D) NHL
Legwand, David (C) NHL
Ekholm, Mattias (D) NHL
Garrison, Jason (D) NHL
Gunnarsson, Carl (D) NHL
Eaves, Patrick (RW)
Hejda, Jan (D) NHL
Pyatt, Tom (C) NHL
Joensuu, Jesse (LW) AHL
Deschamp, Nic (C) AHL
Cormier, Patrice (C) AHL
$9.0 million

Good trades. Getting out of the Legwand contract alone is a huge move.

I wanted Ekholm, so I paid up. took few good assets but his contract and NHL play fits in perfectly. Thanks for the deal KG.

Well, Im compliant now. So I dont need to do anything until Gaustad comes of IR. If I have to I'll buy out a player or two. I do need to add some CPHL D though.
