I must confess a guilty pleasure of reviewing Oilers' media and fan blogs these last 2 months.
Last spring and during the offseason, there was an unbelievable amount of arrogance among Oilers followers, in respect to the Flames rebuild and an apparently massive talent discrepancy between the two franchises.
Two months worth of humble pie has been served. Let's move on.
The Oilers are currently 14th in the West with 14 points after 22 games of the season. They are 7 points OUT OF 13TH PLACE in the West. 13th place has 50% more points, and more than a quarter of the season is done.
Sportsclubstats gives them a 67% chance at 14th place, and just a 19% chance at 13th place (14% chance of anything higher than 13th).
This is getting ridiculous. There is a clear and present danger that Eakins could get fired. Structural problems may potentially be addressed.
Far worse, the Oilers may receive a top 3 pick in the draft... again. Enough already.
It's time to start cheering for the Oilers to play .500 or better for the rest of the year. 74 points at least, hopefully a bit more.
It's time for the Oilers to take a few points from our Western Conference competition. I know we are part way into a rebuild, but a playoff opportunity would be a very pleasant surprise in a rebuilding year.
I'll never cheer for the Oilers, I hope every team they play dismantles them and show everyone how wrong they all were when they all thought that the Oilers would become contenders.

I'm no longer worried about the Oilers underacheiving their way to another high pick. The culture sucks and you can smell the oiler stink from here. They'll find ways to ruin whomever the "next one" is. Full tank Edmonton!!
I will not deny that I do take some sort of joy out of the Oilers right now. Yet to be honest I want the canucks and the oilers to have good teams. Cause it actually means something when you beat a good team versus a peewee team.
I cant believe I am saying this, I feel sorry for their fans. Not all of them but a large chunk of them. Passionate Canadian hockey fans, a bunch of them probably more qualified to run the team than the current group.
What makes this even funnier is the fact that Lowe and MacT still have jobs. Jobs they were gifted, not earned. If Calgary fans were subjected to this we would be going nuts. They are not getting better anytime soon while the team is ran by these morons. Never the less I admit I don't mind watching the show.
Fans booing the team off the ice, in the concourse, I normally would say that is classless by fans. Normally, I don't blame them at all though.
How about we worry about the Flames making a "surprise rebuild playoff" first and maybe 30 or 50 years down the road worry about the Oilers making 13th place

I, for one, completely agree with this sentiment. The top 2 ranked players are touted to be generational forwards, and the third is a blue chip defenseman.
I do not want one of those players suiting up for an Oilers organization that has shed itself of Lowe and MacTavish. The best chance for the Oilers to extend their misery is to end up in the 6th to 9th overall limbo region - not good enough for a sniff at the playoffs, not bad enough to draft a difference maker.
We've been there. It was called the 90s, the Young Guns era, and it was truly terrible.
I hope the agents and handlers of all of McDavid/Eichel/Hanifin are seriously suggesting to their clients to demand a trade if selected by the Oilers. It could end up costing them tens of millions of dollars in the long run.

at this point they could have Mcdavid, Eichel, Haffin, and still manage to screw things up. Why would any player go there and work harder when the status quo is going through the motions.
The best thing about this is its a win-win situation for Flames fans.
Oilers continue to suck...ongoing hilarity and humiliation.
Oilers actually start winning some games...helps the Flames in the standings and gives the Oil a false sense of security.
Couldn't ask for more.
When you put it that way, it's not that bad... as long as DoubleF is correct, and the Oilers lose the lottery and do not get one of the top 2 in the draft.
But I would hate to see a lot of structural improvements. I would rather they keep the coach/management/roster. Shuffle the deck chairs, maybe.
If they go 0-49-1 against the West, I am afraid that someone is going to figure out that major changes have to be made. I would prefer that a false sense of security comes in after some mediocre results the rest of the year.
