Icon31 Kings sign Martinez to 6 year extension ($4mil AAV)

Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie
LAK and Alec Martinez have agreed to terms on a six-year contract extension, believed to be AAV of $4M. Was to be UFA on July 1.

That team is getting expensive. Are they going to have money for Toffoli when he's due for his next deal?

If we didn't already know it, deals like this highlight that in a couple of years, TJ Brodie's contract might be one of, if not THE best deal in the NHL. That's not intended as a slight on Martinez either.

i think more than anything, this deal really shows how rare young top 4 defenseman are and they are going to be a very scarce commodity to have for the next few years..... if you have them, lock them up. If you don't have them? you won't get them through UFA, you got to draft and develop them yourself.

Well he's no Brodie but I guess it's a fair signing.

They, much like Chicago, are banking on the salary cap increasing and/or their scouting staff finding his replacement long before it ever becomes an issue.

I think that is a great deal for LA. Seems like teams are getting smarter (Brodie, Gallagher, Martinez). Good value, takes youngish players out of the UFA market for a few years.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

A 20ish point Dman with top 4 capabilities at $4M is pretty good. It does suck that they've signed him from 27-33 as this is likely his last contract.

Its an okay contract. It'll be good value for 2-3 years, but there is likely going to be a point where he isnt worth it anymore.

Defensemen they have under their control for the next 5 years at least:

Doughty
Muzzin
Voynov
Martinez

All between 24 and 27. Throw in Quick and you have the best back end in hockey for a long time.

Looking at that list, I'm pretty sure I would number them as #1Doughty #2 Muzzin #3 Martinez and #4 Voynov. I just don't feel that we can prove Voynov has beaten them yet.
