Scary indeed. I hope this isn't becoming a story because someone did indeed get infected.

“This particular home-based tattoo operation did not have these proper sterilization or sanitation processes in place, meaning individuals who received tattoos through this operation may have been exposed to viruses, including Hepatitis B and C, and HIV,” Dr. Judy MacDonald, medical officer of health for the Calgary zone, said in a release.

This is why they shouldn't let tattoo business's reside in someone's house.

It was shut down on Oct 30. Do they just instantly tell people to get tested? Or was someone positive tatted there and because of dirty needles it is put in the media?

I think it's a blanket warning when a lack of standards were in place.

It's ridiculous that someone who gives tattoos for a living wouldn't want to practice proper sterilization techniques. After all, they are exposed to the risk just as much as their customers.

In the same breath, why on Gods green earth would anyone want to get a tattoo from someone who worked out of their house?

Are they though? They're wearing gloves and not getting needled. Not saying that risk wouldn't increase, but I would think most of the risk still lays with the tattooee.

House or no house, you expect proper standards to be maintained. These issues can arise in any location due to shoddy management.
With that said, I don't know if there are licensed/certified shops based in houses in Calgary.

Absolutely. It just seems to me that the odds of that not being the case are much higher from a home based business.

If I recall correctly one of the city's most popular artists worked out of his home in inglewood - all of his sanitation equipment and gear was out in the open for people to see. I'd rather go to him than say some guys who got together and opened a shop in a bay of a strip mall in a scummy part of town.
You can be a pro regardless of the setting. It's all about your standard practices.

Who is/was the owner of this place? The public should know just incase he gets a job elsewhere and dirty practices are continued.

Tattooing is essentially a form of unlicensed surgery an amateur doctor pretending to be an artist.

Ugh. They just showed it on the news and that is actually a rather flattering photo of the building.
What could possibly compel anyone to think it's a good idea to go into a dumpy apartment and get tattooed in the kitchen? Or maybe in the tub? I don't know.
I assume it's a lot cheaper than a reputable shop, and sure, some people don't have a lot of dough, but this is just crazy to me. Literally crazy. You have craziness if you go in there to get that portrait of your dog.
