Default Speculation about a regime change in North Korea

Really interesting article that speculates that Kim Jung-Un is no longer in charge of the rogue state and hasn't been seem in over a month.

Is it because he broke both his ankles by gaining too much weight?

That would help explain why the North suddenly sent high level "reconciliation" delegates to South Korea:

To me this is no more believable than the other stories written about North Korea.

Wasn't it being reported, about a month ago, that Kim Jong-Un was near death due to his poor eating habits and obesity?

That was based around his limp, and that was the last time he was seen in public.

I take this report with a bit of a grain of salt. However the one thing that these regime's are is creatures of habit.

They attack their problems the same way. If he is indeed ill they will take him out of the public eye, They did the same thing with his father, with his Grandfather they allowed him to retire from public view.

There are multiple factions always kept at war with each other, the Military, Their security and intelligence service, and the upper advisers. the two elder Kim's were masters at keeping them at each others throats so that they'd fight for the affection and favor of he leader.

But it was always a very delicate balance, and to be honest it seems that the Military has won the battle for now, with all of their saber rattling and incursions and weapons testing and development that's happening over there.

It will be interesting to see what happens if Kim Un does tumble, there's not a successor in place from the family.

There are two brothers left, Kim Jong-Nam was the original successor until he embarrassed the family by trying to sneak into Japan. Kim Jong-Chul was declared to be too feminine (gay) and is an after thought.

Kim Jong-Il's daughter Kim Sul-Song is fairly high up in the party apparatus, she's was at one time in charge of the security around her father and ran the Propaganda wing of the party.

However she is a girl.

Who would have thought that in the end it wasn't B2 bombers or F22's that protected us from the supreme ruler, but the French and their Camembert!

Yet there is nothing about it, no rumbles, no comment, nada here in South Korea.
The second in command showed up for the closing of the Asian games, did some back slapping and wiener wanking apparently...that's about it.

Lets say there's a regime change and they want unification with S Korea, is there any reason other than romantic ones that would make it worthwhile for S Korea?

What would the word do if they decided to become a province of china, with special economic and political rights afforded to the Jung Dynasty?

North Korea has little in terms of farmland, but have pretty vast mineral resources that could be exploited.

If you combine the two countries a unified Korea would have the best of both worlds.

However the cost of feeding, clothing, providing proper health care, re-education, building infrastructure etc would be enormous, just based on averages if the two Korea's combined you'd have a third world nation for a while.

I think if China took over NK and lets say in a sign of good will shut down their nuclear arms program and put a bullet in that whole family the whole world would rejoice, then they'd wake up and find a fairly aggressive China right up against the South Korean border.

China wouldn't want to take on the problems of North Korea though, they like things pretty much the way it is, a country separating them from a natural entry point into Asia.

Not to mention I think if something like that happened, the UN would be looking at special case emigration to ease the population adjustment. Perhaps there would be opportunities for families to join their relatives or loved ones in North America, Europe, or Australia. There are no doubt a good chunk of people that would leave if given the opportunity.

I was thinking more along the lines of china Making NK a province and investing heavily in the area, China is the only country that hasn't been demonized by the NK government, and I'm sure china would love 25 million labourers who would work for a fraction of what current Chinese labourers are making. The Jung family would become the head of the province.

I don't think that China would want the responsibility of managing that mess, or becoming responsible for it.

Plus the investment at this point would be massive.

North Korea has mineral resources, but they are the same as what China has.

As well, from my understanding, North Korea has a cash for workers program in place with China.

The first book that always comes to my mind when talk of NK ensures is The Tears of My Soul. It is written by one of the NK ninjas, Hyun Hee Kim, who after graduating from spy school was assigned to blow up a passenger jet, KAL858.

After completing the murder, and being caught by the South Koreans, she was completely dumbfounded but the difference in quality of life.

There are a lot of really good books on North Korea. Under the loving care of the fatherly leader and the impossible state come to mind.

I picked up a book that had North Korean propaganda posters and pictures and it was fascinating.
