Flames may have taken the plunge into analytics?
mc79hockey @mc79hockey 29m
I just read on @############ that the Flames hired an analytics guy. Anyone know who it is?
Just a twitter comment at this point, but interesting.

Harrison Mooney said the same thing a couple weeks ago, but no name was given.

Whether you're a supporter of advanced stats or not, it's good to see Burkie open to new ideas.

Seconded.
I still remember arguing with him over the role Hannan was going to play when he got here. He was pumping him up so much you thought he was related to the guy. Saying he'd take over for Regs, may even get first pairing minutes, when I had him pegged as a 5-6 guy. Obviously we know who was correct on that one.
Also, what is it with stats guys and being really angry when they argue? Is it a prerequisite to be pissy when arguing if you wanna be stats guy? I don't mind a good argument but ricardow and our other friend certainly liked to take it to another level with almost every discussion.

I support them, they can't hurt. I just don't like it when people try to read too much into them, or use some lesser known stats to completely contradict or throw out some of the other better used stats or knowledge.
As I see it now advanced stats should be used to augment decisions, not make them. Also I think some of the people who use them rely on one or two solely and don't look at all the details, even by their own standards and stats. IE they use them when it benefits their case, not fairly across the board, or fairly with the player they are pumping up.

If only we had a way to calculate someone's "grit".....
I wouldn't be surprised as this seems to be the new way to go with things.

Hopefully it's not Ricardo or Kent Wilson.
Rob Vollman? Maybe the Flames were the mystery team that hired Eric Tulsky a while back.

I think Rob Vollman would do well in that role. I've had the chance to chat hockey with him for several hours and he really knows his stuff.

Advanced stats are certainly interesting, and more often than not I find they more meet what I think I'm seeing then the average view on the player. I'm sure many of you feel the same.
Backlund looked good well before he starting scoring last year ... I remember that Pinder/Boomer scrap that I got involved in where Boomer was saying he'd be out of the league in a few years.
I saw a guy that was forcing the play, and doing solid but little things all over the ice. Advanced stats support that.
But I agree .... just because a spreadsheet says something doesn't mean it's 100% fact, and all challengers are trogolodytes. Ones mind has to be open.
I think a lot of this came from the Leafs collapse last year ... those guys were all over it before it happened. True the same could have been gleemed from simple shots on goal, but the leafs were the worst possession team and they paid for it.

I'm going to go ahead and coin the term "Yelle Index" right now.
I'll release it to the public domain for now, but reserve the right to visit a royalties addendum at a future date.

Burke is open to advanced stats and analytics, I believed what he's said is he hasn't found a system that can accurately predict the performance of a player so he relies on scouts and watching a player for that. I don't think he's against using advanced stats as a coaching tool and I believe the Flames have been using them for a while.

someone else can look it up but this is kinda what we're talking about with the ricardo comments. It was something like RGI (the only reason I remember is because I said it was "really getting irritating" so I think you've been beat)

I'm a bit of a stats person, and I think that most of us like to have a conversation, make strong points, and defend them strongly. It can come off as arguementitive. It's usually made worse when someone obviously does not follow your line of thinking.
I'm actually much worse in person than I am here. But I could see how the comfort of an internet form could make someone over the top.
for Ricardo I think sometimes he sees numbers like blocked shots, and thinks it means allot. While missing the bigger picture, that hockey is a situational sport with subjective stat keeping, and the stats in themselves are inherently flawed. Many many factors dilute the value of that type of stat, so you can only give them so much weight.
I Still think stats can a do play an important role in understanding more about players, I just don't believe hockey is such a formulaic sport that you can figure it all out on a spreadsheet.

I think with each Arena adding in SportVu (or whatever company the NHL chooses to go with) each team is going to have to hire a head of analytics just to build a database to easily read the data it gives out
