I wonder why Breen chose to sign in Boston. I would imagine there is less of an opportunity there than in Calgary. Did Calgary not offer him a contract at all? I would imagine some other organization with less depth than Boston would have taken a shot on him.

no. i believe any player that is picked up has to stick with the NHL club in order to not have to go thru waivers again.
considering the little he's been able to prove, there isn't an NHL team that has a weak enough d depth chart so as to have breen fit in as your top 7.

wasn't Jonathon Blum at one point considered a really good prospect? One of those players who have never been able to make the jump from AHL to NHL, I guess.

I thought there is no way Justin Faulk is on waivers, until I realized there is actually a player called Justin Falk.

Lots of players who were once in the Flames system.
When Butler signed a two-way deal, he had to know this was a strong possibility, especially with the Blues depth on D. You have to think there would be some teams who could use his experience and low salary in the NHL.
Not really a surprise about Cundari. Depending on his play, and the play of some of the young d-men, he'll probably get some action in Calgary later in the year, but he wasn't going to start with the big club unless there were a lot of injuries on the blue line.

I wonder if his decision to sign in St. Louis in the first place was his "best case" scenario, since he is a local there. Maybe he was okay signing the two-way deal in the first place because he had a good sense that even if he were waived, that he would likely get picked up by another team.

Yes, I realize that picking a player off of waivers means the player has to play on the NHL team that puts a claim on him. If not, he has to clear waivers again before getting demoted. I was actually not talking about waivers at all.
I was merely wondering why Breen would choose to sign on a team with way more defensive depth than Calgary in the first place. You have to assume there is way less opportunity for him there than in Calgary, or another organization somewhere. I couldn't remember if Calgary offered him a contract or just decided not to re-sign him (or offered him an AHL-only contract).

I would claim both of Elliott and Samuelsson. They aren't spectacular, but it would help to address our depth in terms of young D-men. If they suck you can just waive them. They are more or less of the same class of talent as Sieloff and Wotherspoon.
