Default Have any of our off season acquisitions impressed?

Let's see:
Setoguchi: pretty unimpressive so far
Bollig: meh
Raymond: injured so unfair to judge I guess
Hiller: ok I guess, not big enough sample size yet

I guess some of the D have been ok:
Engelland probably the most impressive followed by Diaz and then Brookbank.
Potter: injured

So far not much from these guys. Young guys have been WAY more impressive.

Setoguchi = Should not be in the NHL
Bollig = 13th forward
Raymond = looked pretty average and somewhat slow at Winsport
Hiller = weak

Engelland was decent. He's a quality #6.

Most of the new vets are not very good. We do have a bunch of good guys on the way up, so hopefully some guys start getting replaced. Although if we are going to intentionally unintentionally tank this year for McDavid/Eichel, then guys like Setoguchi, Bollig and Hiller are definitely some quality guys for that goal.

it's all in the longer term plan of acquiring McDavid.

I like Engelland so far -- hopefully he can keep that up against regular NHLers instead of just prospects mixed with vets.

Conversely, I'll give Bolland the benefit of the doubt so far -- if he can play a regular shift in Chicago, he should find a place here.

Too early to tell on Hiller. Still hopeful.

It's not fair to jump to conclusions about Treliving or draft picks, but I'm not sure that it's unfair to note that none of the vets that Treliving has brought in have looked any better on the ice than they looked on paper/in previous seasons, and they all looked mediocre to poor on paper/in previous seasons.

As long as their status as new acquisitions doesn't protect them from getting cut, benched or demoted to the AHL though, it doesn't really matter at this point.

I think it would send a good message to the team if Setoguchi was put on waivers.

It would send a horrible message to the UFA market.

How? That borderline NHL players shouldn't come to one of the worst teams in the league and expect a roster spot to be handed to them?

Why would we want that segment of the UFA market?

Don't be an idiot.

You don't sign a UFA to 1-way deal, then waive him prior to even playing a regular season game. That'd be a poor showing of loyalty, regardless of the caliber of player you do it to.

How does the caliber of player not matter?

What the Flames do with Setoguchi, who is lucky to have an NHL contract, should not and will not have any implication on what happens when we go after real UFAs in a few years.

I'd rather we cut the players who have performed terribly and give the spots to the players that have earned them. That breeds a better culture.

It's pre-season. The vets know they pretty much have a spot sewn up - rightly or wrongly - and they're not going to go all out until the games matter. I guess you could say they will lose their jobs, but they won't.

I don't think some realize how much it helps the youngsters playing in young guns tourney over the veterans for being in game shape at the start of preseason.

Some of the youngsters have looked better than all veterans. I'm not just talking Bollig , Setoguchi , Jones ect, I'm also talking looking better than Hudler. Are you guys trying to tell me that these youngsters deserve a spot over him?

Bollig will be fine on the 4th line when the season starts. Ortio needs starts so no problem having Hiller. Raymond will be good as a 2nd line winger. The only player I will give you is Setoguchi who looks awful . Even then he at best will be a 13th forward in the pressbox. That's no place for a youngster to have a spot on the team.

I'm watching the Vancouver game and other than the first 10 minutes from Bennett and Byron none of the youngsters look ready to go against opposition veterans.

I'm trying not to be too down on Setoguchi, because he's here on such a cheap one-year deal. I wish it was a PTO though.

4 pre season games left for the NHL regulars to get primed up. I'm going to wait to write off the 1 way contract players. Although I think we will see very little competition left by the time the WPG games come rolling around. Goalies and majority of the D will be cut or re-assigned and a couple of extra forwards will only remain.
