Default Tell me about Metal Detectors

I'm looking at possibly taking up a new hobby and buying a metal detector. Budget would be around $1000.
And yes...typing this made me feel old.
I know Bass Pro has a couple in store, and tons online, but I don't know where to start. So many different models and I don't comprehend what exactly the differences are.

Anyone have any suggestions on good models or other places to buy or what features I should be looking for?

Forgive my nosiness but what kind of hobby involves metal detectors?

The possibility of finding gold or old coins is what interests me the most. I think "treasure hunting" would be fun with the kids.

Oh right that makes sense for some reason I was thinking of you buying a security style metal detector and I was very confused.

I know all about them...there is not much history in or around Calgary, so not much to pick through vs civil war areas in the states, beaches, etc.

On top of that, Canadian coins react the same as beer tabs, junk, etc. so high end metal detectors pass right over loonies and other coins.

I just sold a Minelab E-trac, a very high end unit, but did not good around Calgary.

It is a great hobby if you are into history and things like that.

I'm in NB right now, and while at the beach yesterday, was reminded how cool it would be to have one. I thought it would be cool to go around the river banks around here, but after seeing the beer tab comment, might re-think that one.

So, am I going to get a decent bang for my buck at $1000?

The Minelab E-trac I mentioned earlier will not react to beer tabs at all, it filters that stuff out. Pretty amazing unit and I think they have a newer model out now. With that said, you will not find canadian coins with it, they will be filtered out. Jewelry will be identified clearer than pretty much any other unit. They can be had for cheaper than listed price, just bargain with the seller. If I was near a beach, I would keep it.

That unit tells you depth and if you understand the screen, it tells you what it is detecting in the ground.

Get a pinpointer as well, they are vital to locate quickly.
