Default 5 Reasons Why 2013 Was The Best Year In Human History

5 Reasons Why 2013 Was The Best Year In Human History

I've seen so many people on various social media post something to the tune of "it's all going down the crapper" that I think this is a really important message.

Quote:
In 2011, 91 percent of respondents in a sample of 21 diverse countries said that equal treatment of people of different races or ethnicities was important to them.
Quote:
In 2011, 86 percent of people in a diverse 21 country sample said that equal treatment on the basis of gender was an important value. The U.N.’s Human Development Report’s Gender Inequality Index — a comprehensive study of reproductive health, social empowerment, and labor market equity — saw a 20 percent decline in observable gender inequalities from 1995 to 2011. IMF data show consistent global declines in wage disparities between genders, labor force participation, and educational attainment around the world. While enormous inequality remains, 2013 is looking to be the worst year for sexism in history.

This is several years old, but here is a Montrealer's research on the subject:

Quote:
So the question is, why are so many people so wrong about something so important? I think there are a number of reasons. One of them is we have better reporting. The Associated Press is a better chronicler of wars over the surface of the Earth than sixteenth-century monks were. There's a cognitive illusion. We cognitive psychologists know that the easier it is to recall specific instances of something, the higher the probability that you assign to it. Things that we read about in the paper with gory footage burn into memory more than reports of a lot more people dying in their beds of old age. There are dynamics in the opinion and advocacy markets: no one ever attracted observers, advocates and donors by saying things just seem to be getting better and better.

Its hard for people to believe this, thanks to modern instant media. Pinker has been taking this talk all over the place and he always gets the same surprised reactions.

Interesting. Click on the source link. Click anywhere - ANYWHERE - else on their site; and it's almost all bad news. Particularly their very first tab: "Climate".
