He'll be a UFA after this season then, no?

If that's the case, it looks like he wants out.

Or that Edmonton doesn't see Petry in their long-term plans.

Yes he will be UFA after this season:

Elliotte Friedman @FriedgeHNIC
Petry checks in at just under $3.1M. Will be UFA on July 1, 2015.

The fact that someone wants out of Edmonton is a safe bet.

KHL teams now patiently waiting for their farm team to finish off the 14/15 season. He will be a good addition for them.

I actually think Petry is alright. He probably just looks bad because he has to shelter that awful Schultz kid they have, but now they have Fayne for that

He would be a real nice trading chip at the deadline.

How so? He is a pending UFA now

I think he would be better trade bait as an unsigned RFA

Not a horrible contract for Petry given that organizations propensity to pay top dollar for mediocre players. If they dump him at the trade deadline while they are well out of it they can probably get a 4th rounder for him.

Now to sign Super Star Justine Schultz to that 6x6 contract....

Petry is smartly taking a wait and see, he doesn't believe there's much future to this sad hockey club so he's charted his escape route.

Meh, on any other team he's a bottom pairing guy, the less minutes the less blunders. in Edmonton he's a top pairing guy and sure shot future hall of famer.

It is really hard to judge Oiler players while they're playing on the Oilers. Cogliano looks a lot better in Anaheim than I even thought was possible during his stay in Edmonton. We won't really know how bad/good/mediocre Petry is until he plays for a few years on a decent team, or even a team with a professional defensive system.

Sure Petry looks bad doing "the swarm" but IMO even Gio would look bad on a Dallas Eakins team.

For people saying tough to judge Oiler players in Edmonton Petry was awful in the WC's as well.

Now that US defense and team overall was horrible and Oiler like but if you are constantly horrible tough to blame the team and not the player.

Wow, a one year deal for a 26 year old RFA is basically saying: you're done with this organization.

Seems like no question that he'll be traded at the deadline.

He could also be positioning himself so that if the Oilers want to keep him, they have to overpay.
