So The minister emailed that he has reinstated the pay for diploma marking. So It looks like the work was valued and that the hold out was effective. I just hope that enough teachers come back to marking to finish the exams in time.

The "that's" aren't necessary.
Alberta Education hasn't posted anything on their site yet. Do you have a copy of the email, OP? Right now the pay is still $100 on regular work days, and $200 on weekends/holidays. In addition to that pay, there is $150/day subsistence pay and travel is paid at $0.505 per KM with a minimum pay of $40. Here is the link I found on their site: http://education.alberta.ca/media/609664/fee.pdf

Maybe it's an internal e-mail going around in education circles right now. From what I recall, this is extra pay on top of their regular teaching salaries for marking assignments during their regular work hours.
Part of me wants to comment how they should just accept it as part of job expectations as other industries expect workers to absorb extra workload during heavy phases. Speaking with my friends who are teachers however, I understand how gruelling marking can be.

You know you don't get $100 for marking his post, right?

Thats a shame, I was going to buy stock in Scantron if the teachers refused to volunteer to be paid for work.

Then it's a good thing I don't mark exams as I have a tendency to write superfluously.
IIRC, the province paid several thousand to a software firm last year to do a study on whether or not electronic grading of essays was feasible. No surprise that the company came back saying that their own software was much more efficient and effective than human grading.

I know you're kidding, but Scantron is actually part of a private company. I think it's a great business, and looked into investing in it, but Ronald Perelman bought out the minority shareholders of the holding company at a very low price in 2011.
It became a widely cited precedent as the courts have consistently ruled against the minority shareholders. (who in my non-legal opinion got screwed)

Thanks for the edit, I didn't realize there was such a high level of concern over it on a forum posting board. As for the email it is an internal email circulating and I am sure that it will be announced soon enough. The alteration is to the daily payment on weekdays. It has been reinstated at its previous amount of 200 per day. So the pay for the contract, for those who would like to know the exact amounts, is 200 per day for the marking, 150 per diem (food & accommodations), and travel (from Calgary usually ~250).

So, just to be clear, at $350 a day your pride is no longer mortally wounded as you now make more per day than the kid at Tim Horton's?

Do the teachers that already signed up get the revised/updated pay or the originally stated pay?

Surely they get the revised, but knowing the government they will probably get both.

You're right. Why use proper forms of communication, when you are trying to communicate? Why try and convince people you are able to mold young minds, and help advance them in life, with the correct words that should be taught to them? So often teachers are asked by students why they have to do algebra, homework, English assignments. It's so that they develop critical thinking, problem solving, and communication skills. I often hear/read that it doesn't matter what words are used, because it's a forum, twitter, facebook, text, conversation between friends, etc., and then when I get resumes from these people, they are still written in the same crappy style. It's because they never get out of it. I don't see how you'd think people wouldn't jump at a chance to educate you, when you are preaching about your educating of others.
