How bad do you have to be as a defenseman to not make the Oilers

So... Ference, Schultz (lol), Klefbom, Nurse, junk, junk, junk on D?

Thank god Craig MacTavish isn't smart enough to trade one of his core players for an actual defenceman of actual quality. Because that might well be the worst defence in NHL history.

Funny thing is Nurse is still at least a couple years out, which means he will probably be thrown to the wolves. Them trading Smid to this day is still one of the WTF moments of last season.

That's the scary thing, eh? They could probably bring him up next year as a 5-6 playing sheltered minutes and allow him to grow into a top pairing defenceman over time. They will probably throw him to the wolves as a 1-2 and pray to god he figures it out without being permanently damaged in the process. Both mentally and physically, because we all know the Oilers will rush him back into action if he should get hurt.

Totally agree. Even if you tired hard to come up with what would be the worst development environment for a rookie defenseman, I don't think you could think of a situation worse then the Oilers right now.

Well... I wouldn't call Marincin "junk". He's got potential but he's pretty green. I wouldn't put Nurse into the NHL yet either (Probably put Klefbom back in the AHL for another year as well).

So basically...

??? - ???
??? - Ference
Marincin - Schultz (bottom pairing minutes at EV + 1st unit PP minutes)

... yeah, that's pretty stinky. Really ought to try and move heavan and earth to get two legit top 4 defensemen if they want to have any hope of getting to the playoffs anytime soon.

Even with that you're still over playing Ference who's a 5/6 guy at this point.

I find great amusement when I read HFOilers and they are talking about Petry as a top 4 guy when I see him get walked around about 5 times in every 'Edmonton is no good' video

The best part about it is yesterday during the Draft Lottery event on TSN Howson said something to the tune of. "We feel our defense is a position of strength in our organization, with quality guys like Kelfbom, Nurse, and Marincin."

Not sure Oiler bias is tainting the view of Marincin.
Not much offensive upside there, but he looks to be a very solid young defenseman to me.

I watched the Canucks Oilers game on Saturday night. Marincin looked awful and got worked over most of the night. I remember one shift he gave the puck up 3 times in his own zone which led to many scoring chances for the Canucks.

To clarify, he said their prospect depth was in a position of strength.

The Oilers need 1-2 "ready now" defensemen.

Getting rid of Smid was a ming-bogglingly perplexing move. And boggingly is not even a word.

Of course there will be situations like that... but any defenceman on that team averaging 19 minutes a night through half a season played who is only -2 has to be doing something right in the overall.
Advance stats show that as well, have him as by quite a bit the best of that bunch (while playing the toughest minutes). I know being the best of that bunch doesn't say much, but
