Wild Tried to Trade Heatley to Calgary at deadline?
Mike Russo's doing a live chat right now (which has to be extremely painful, with all the rubes bugging him about Vanek). Anyway, this little nugget just came out:
Can you explain the Stafford trade complications you mentioned at the deadline?

I'm told my outside sources and not confirmed by anybody inside the organization that the Wild was trying to trade Heatley to Calgary to free up cap space

Burke did say that he tried to make a deal that involved us taking on cap space for something in return. It's extremely plausible that this was it.
Too bad it didn't happen.

Probably was offering not enough incentive for us to take the boat anchor. Though cammy is pretty much Dany Heatley right now except he back checks

Do you really want a Ferrari smashing a guy like that around the kids? Isn't he out of shape and plagued by a bad work ethic?
What would they do with him? Bury in the minors? Buy him out?

It would have had to be Heatley + 1st + Granlund for a 7th to make it worthwhile.

If this is the deal Burke was talking about, everything was settled on the Flames side, but it required the other team to complete another deal, which they weren't able to do.
It's likely Minnesota was trying to get something done for Vanek, which would have required them dumping some cap hit. When that fell through, it was no longer worth it for them to pay the Flames to take on Heatley.

Perhaps it could be why the deal never happened. I have a ton of faith in Burkes hockey smarts and he was most likely asking more than what he should have to take on a potential cancer. He stuck to his guns and didnt budge....which I like! I feel like Feaster would have caved last minute just to try and add something to the resume!

I remember a few years ago someone here trying to argue that Heatley would end up being a better player than Iginla.
Crazy talk.

Wasn't this the three way trade that failed because Islanders didn't fall through with it? As I recall, the Flames were taking Heatley so the Wild could clear up cap space for Vanek, but I don't think the Islanders budged. So the Wild had to settle trading Buffalo for Moulson.

Would have been worth it just to read Heatleys tweets about Calgary.

my guess is that it would have been a three-way deal.
MIN gets Vanek + very, very, very little from CGY
CGY gets Heatley + picks/prospects
NYI gets whatever MIN would have paid for Vanek
or something like that.

I wonder what Calgary's compensation would have been to take Heatley back for the remainder of the year. A 2nd round pick? I don't think Burke would do this type of cap relief for anything less...

Yeah, it's not like we have anybody on our team with a checkered history like alcohol abuse or anyth- oh wait.
Lazy is something he's been called his entire career considering his talent (when have we not heard that before?) but it's mostly a matter of his body not being NHL capable anymore after injuries, surgeries.

I personally dont see much difference between Moulson and Vanek. Wild are smart (or lucky) to not have things work for vanek and likely pay more to make the overall deal work.

We have someone on our team that killed a team mate while driving a new Ferrari 140 MPH in a residential area? I don't claim to be an expert, but if that's true then I really need to catch up on my Flames fun facts.
Yeah, I can accept the part about his body being worn out.
I guess if they really need cap space, they will still need it at the draft.

thing is: since Vanek might very well sign with them anyway, they could potentially go all crazy and have them both next year.
FORWARDS

Ryan Suter ($7.538m) / Jonas Brodin ($0.894m)
Jared Spurgeon ($2.667m) / Marco Scandella ($1.025m)
Keith Ballard ($1.500m) / Clayton Stoner ($2.000m)

Niklas Backstrom ($3.417m)
Josh Harding ($1.900m)
BUYOUTS
Tom Gilbert ($0.000m)

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(estimations for 2014-15)
SALARY CAP: $71,100,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,456,923; BONUSES: $3,383,333
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $2,643,077
easily cap compliant. Scary offense ... goaltending a bit of a question mark (they do have Kuemper though) and defense could use one more good player, but other than that ...
