Default NHL players will not participate in 2018 Olympics?

Not sure if I should have tagged it news or rumour.

At least as per Dreger

http://beta.thescore.com/nhl/news/427461

Quote:
"One thing that we need to appreciate with Ed Snider and many owners around the league: they weren't in support of the NHL participating in the Olympic games in Sochi. And the NHL will not participate in Korea.

There's a lot of reasons why but this isn't a news flash. Ed Snider has been, again, among the most vocal among owners in showing no support for the Olympic games because of its disruption to the National Hockey League."
Of course a lot can change in 4 years so who knows.

I wouldn't doubt it. There has been talk for a while that Sochi could be the last time the NHL participates. As has been said, it's 4 years from now and a lot of things can change, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if this is it.

I'm pretty sure I'm in the minority but I'd prefer the NHL guys not play. I don't like the disruption to the NHL season and I'd rather see amateurs play this tournament.

I agree with the idea, and don't like the NHL disruption either, but to me the Olympics should be the best of the best, regardless of what their day job is.

Are you kidding? That's crazy to me as a fan. This would be terrible.

Would I rather watch Calgary vs. Columbus game 65 in February in a too-long 82 game season or Canada vs. Sweden in a game full of all stars playing with passion for their country?

Easy decision.

Would that make the NHL the only professional association that doesn't allow it's players to attend the Olympics?

I don't think the MLB has ever allowed it's players to go while baseball was an olympic sport.

Sentiment reminds me of Wirtz not allowing home games to be televised for all those years.

Don't doubt it at all. Japan was a rehearsal for SLC. Europe was owed seeing the NHL'ers in Turin and weren't going to pull the players for one Olympics with Vancouver on the horizon. Then of course Vancouver, and then the Russians were making a stink in late 2010 when the NHL wasn't 100% on board with going there now..and guys like Ovechkin said they'd be going anyway.

There is no ulterior agenda for going to Korea/promoting hockey in Korea, for the IIHF or IOC, as there has been since Japan.

And the big kicker? TV. Remember watching some prelim games and then the Czech semi final at 2am in 1998 from Nagano? Me too, barely. Looking at it as a business, no way the sponsors pay a premium to the networks to air their flag waving ads, when its 4am in the Eastern time zone and the audience is chopped severely.

How many allow during players to attend during their season and I'm not talking about 2nd tier leagues like the KHL? Personally unless the Olympics are in North America I would rather the NHL not participate.

I've always felt the Olympics should be for amateur athletes playing their sport for the sport not a bunch of professional millionaires whether hockey, basketball or tennis. Isn't pro golf in their too?

And get barrel jumping back in too. Nothing like seeing guys jumping over barrels on skates

If the NHL cares what fans have to say, it's a no-brainer.

As a hockey fan, the Olympic tournament is one of the most exciting things to happen to the game of hockey. It showcases the best NHL players the world and potential new fans, all while energizing your already loyal fan-base. Bettman knows this...he's not a dummy. They will go to Korea.

I don't believe all fans are on board. I'm not and I know I'm not alone. I would watch team Canada in the Olympics just as much if it was an amateur team as I would if it was the pros. I also personally don't like the drama of the choosing of players as I think it wears on players. I'm an NHL guy first and foremost and have never been a huge fan of professional athletes participating in the Olympics wether it be basketball, hockey or tennis.

Personally, it doesn't really matter. I think some of the other European countries would really benefit from NHL players not attending (goodbye Canadian and American relevance) so it might actually grow the sport abroad.

Either way, I find myself already tired of these Olympics. Way too much drama and political posturing. There always is, but this year seems certainly more apparent than others.

Plus, hours of the Russian accent is going to make me loopy.

If NHL players at the Olympics were to continue, Sochi should be the last one played on international sized ice

I definitely wanna see best on best but I'd prefer if it was in a World Cup format during the offseason. You'd still showcase the league but wouldn't disrupt a professional season.

I am okay with no pros from any sports competing in the Olympics. It always used to be amateurs and there is nothing wrong going back that way. I am sure if an Olympic gold medal really meant that much to some of the project players they could take a year off and bypass a $3 or $4 million plus paycheck
