Calgary High School Student Spends Time Writing Petitions Rather Than Studying...
Lord Beaverbrook students petition against new graduation policy
http://globalnews.ca/news/1174060/lo...uation-policy/
I am sure there are reasons why someone would not be passing grade 12, and all of those reasons are good enough to justify them not being able to walk across the stage...
Maybe we should just round everyone's grades up to 50% then we wouldn't have to deal with this. Better yet, lets do away with grades all together. We can just hand out diplomas like candy. School and studying be damned.
I wish I hadn't had to sit through my high school graduation. Is was pretty freaking boring.
Isn't this how it always worked? I am sure there were some people who did not walk across the stage when I was in high school. I think that maybe the people creating these petitions should spend more time studying and less time complaining about the man keeping them down.

This isn't about failing grade 12. The change in policy is that failing one class will prevent them from walking across the stage, even though they will be graduating.

The common misconception in this policy is that if they score below a 50 average in grade 12, but this policy makes it so that if you have below 50% in a single class, you do not walk the stage.
For example: If you took grade 12 drama and you got 49%, but you pass all your grade 12 classes with flying colours, you are not allowed to walk the stage... I think that's a little excessive.

Well, not exactly. The statement from the CBE in the article says each student is looked at on a case-by-case basis. If a student fails to meet one of the criteria, administration will have a discussion with that student and make a decision.

I didn't walk the stage for a similar reason. I graduated and was on the honour roll (not that that's hard) but since I went to a Catholic school and didn't take religion class I wasn't allowed to walk the stage.

Does this have anything to do with not awarding zeros?

Doesn't matter. If you get the credits required for your Diploma, you get to walk the stage and receive it. Who cares if you fail one class, two classes, three classes... it doesn't matter.
If you get your credits, you get to graduate. What they're doing is ridiculous, and whatever idiotic intention they had with it failed. Good kids who have 110+ credits have been told they are not allowed to walk the stage. That's just plain wrong.

My High School had tougher guidelines for "graduation" than Alberta. and I choose not to take one of the classes they required, so I did not walk the stage, I knew that would happen the day I choose not to take the class.
I still received the same Alberta diploma as everyone else in the mail. I got into university in a competitive program that required an 86% average to apply for. I went to my High Schools Grad Banquet, and missing the ceremony really did not bother me much.
If the schools guidelines are that you must get at least 50% in all of your classes for the final year, then these kids need to take responsibility and either pass the classes or miss the graduation ceremony. I don't see the problem.

Ah Mr.Simpson, he was my old crotchedy principal back in 08 at QE. Doesn't surprise me that he would do this, he rarely showed any school spirit and if he did it was a tier 1 fan effort.

I think the problem is that they didn't decide it at the start of the year, and some classes are already complete.

^^ Exactly. A friend of mine has a kid going there. In the 1st semester she took a course outside of her comfort zone in an effort to challenge herself. She failed the course, and now may not be able to walk the stage to get her diploma.

Yeah I don't agree with them changing it on them mid-year.
I just think it's unnecessary for the school to place so much emphasis on "walking the stage". If they graduate, they should walk. For the school, it should basically be a non-event - so they have to call out an extra name, who cares.

Well judging by the thread title and the first post he either didn't read the article he posted or didn't understand what was actually happening.

Walking across a stage? Is that what this fight is about? Its 15 seconds of your life that you will completely forget.

Yep. If it meant I didn't have to get dressed up and stand in line for who knows how long, I would have intentionally signed up for basket weaving and spent the time in the stairwell, making out with Shirley, just to ensure I would fail the class.
Who am I kidding, Shirley wouldn't have given me the time of day, I would have been stuck with Lana. Not that I would have complained, mind you, at that age I think I would have made out with a Blue Spruce if I thought it would fit.

My graduating class at high school (same school in fact) was ~1000 students.
I didn't even go to my Uni ceremony
