Default Would the Flames make the Playoffs in the east?

A simple question. If the Flames were in the eastern conference, would they make the playoffs?

As it stands right now, their 32 points would put them 4 points out of the 8th and final spot. That is after playing a large portion of their games against the top teams in the west. A couple easier games against the bottom teams in the east could theoretically put us in the mix.

They are playing a hard working, grinding style of hockey that may frustrate some of the more free-wheeling teams. They have also been getting contributions up and down the line up. They are certainly missing a few game breakers, but the Coyotes have done more with less.

Thoughts?

I think any team in the west would make the playoffs out of the east, minus Edmonchuk of course.

Im going to say yes. Its to bad we don't do cross over with the wild cards, that would be neat. With less games against the Sharks, Nucks, St. Louis etc. I think its pretty doable.

There's far too many variables to look at it simply as "They'd be 4 points out of the playoffs in the East!". No, they'd have played an entirely different schedule. As would the rest of the East.

It depends on how many former 20 goal scorers we have in the lineup.

I think if we still had Comeau it would be a lock in the east for us.

We've averaged 1.2 points per game against the East so far and 0.7 points per game against the West. If you flip the number of games we've played against the conferences, we'd be sitting at 34.5 points and would still be out of the playoffs unless we took that extra win from Philadelphia and the extra half a point from Carolina, in which case we'd be in a 3-way tie for the last playoff spot.

Over the course of a full season at the 1.2/0.7ppg pace, we'd end up with 82.4 points in the East. I can't think that would be enough to make the playoffs, but who knows how things will play out with these new divisions.

The Flames (Jets, Stars, Predators...) would certainly be in contention at this point. Especially given how many terrible teams are in contention right now.

No.

To make this hypothetical situation work, you'd have the Flames be a part of the Eastern conference, which doesn't just mean the points transfer over, but rather the schedules are different, the travel is worse, and (in all likelihood) they would play what some might call a more "eastern" game.

But it's a hypothetical situation, so you can make all your own rules up really.

No, because then they would be an eastern conference team, and eastern conference teams suck.

If Calgary was part of the Eastern conference, they would be travelling across the continent for all 41 of their away games, which would make them the only team to do that in the entire NHL.
