Default Hockey Canada will ask Flames for Monahan after Feaster firing. Update: Burke says no

http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/...medium=twitter

Quote:
Canada's national junior team has its eyes on Calgary rookie Sean Monahan again after the Flames shook up their front office Thursday.

They had already been told Monahan would not be loaned for the Dec. 26-Jan. 3 world junior championship, but that was before Flames president of hockey operations Brian Burke fired general manager Jay Feaster.

Scott Salmond, the junior squad's director of hockey operations, said it won't hurt to ask again if the gifted forward is available, even if it may be a longshot.

"A no is a no whether it comes from Brian Burke or Jay," said Salmond. "Out of respect for Brian we'll go back and ask again. I'm sure Brian was part of the original decision. Whether things change or not will be up to the Calgary Flames, but it's worth a try."

Ya, that would be awesome if he could go play.

Burke should let him go. It isn't like Monahan is going to make a difference for the Flames and it is a once in a lifetime experience for the kid.

I think the fact that Burke sent Baertschi down bodes well for Monahan going to the WJC. Seems like he's less convinced than Feaster was that the NHL is the best for the young guys' development.

I think it'll be hard to transition from WJC to NHL.

I don't think it's a good idea.

Brent will only play him on the 4th line anyway. Gotta give Shinkaruk minutes.

Don't think he's going. IMO, he's too valuable to the organization.

If Monahan goes to the WJC and gets injured, the finger will be pointed firmly in Burke's direction. I don't think he'd let that happen.

I say let him go, just hope he doesn't get hurt.

If one is good enough to rep their country in any athletic event they should.

Burke was really, really high on Monahan in his hiring press conference. I think he was of the same mind with Feaster on this one. It sends a fata message to the paying fans if you send away one of your top scorers to a junior competition with the logic that "well we suck anyway." It leaves a hole in the lineup, that's unacceptable. Monahan is our 2nd best centre, for better or worse.

That's good news. Flames suck anyway. No use of Monahan not getting a chance to win rather than getting robbed of opportunities to win. When Feaster and the Flames' management announced they wanted Monahan to stay with the Flames, I thought why? It's like they basically rushed him to become a great player rather than developing him to be a really good player.

Prefer to keep him playing against NHL players. Him player with kids isn't going to improve his game if he's holding his own here.

I say let him go. Not only because I love the World Juniors and want to see Canada win, but because we know Monahan will be part of the Flames future. Lets continue to give Colborne and Buckland as much ice time as possible to determine their future.

Eric Francis just said he asked Burke, and Burke said no.

If Francis can be trusted, he just said he talked to Burke about this possibility and he re-affirmed that Monahan will not be attending the WJHC.
