Default Glass Insurance - Automotive

Hoping there are some insurance gurus here... Over the past year I've found that it seems like there's a guru for everything on this site!

I have two new cars (2013 and 2014) with a few thousand clicks on them. They both have expensive windshields and with the rocks (don't call it sand!) flying, I know i'll get hit sooner than later. On my current policy with TD Insurance I have the 13D Endorsement - 13D Glass Breakage - Limitation of coverage

Now I know I can remove this (eg: Get full glass coverage) but I've always been under the impression that in Alberta it doesn't make sense, as the increase in your rates for claiming a rock hit is more than a windscreen. However I've never actually done the math myself and am a bit scared to call my insurer and ask (do they frown on that?), so I figured a bright mind here may work in insurance or have asked this question and done the math already!

tl;dr - Is it cost-effective to remove the 13D Limited Glass endoresement on my auto policy and get full glass if I am worried about rock-caused-cracks?

Look up these guys ami.ab.ca you can get it without a broker and the premiums/deductibles are very low. Much better alternative than removing the 13d

Insurance is part of my business, but not property insurance. I would never insure little things like windshields and extended warranties. Insure the big things like your life, disability and if you cause someone' death in a car crash. Self insure the little things.

Thanks. I'd been there before I think? It's about $200 a year and you have to use their repair shop and as I recall the glass they mandate you use is of course the cheapest...Chinese-made PPG (no thanks!). I was hoping my insurer would allow me to use OEM glass from the dealer (hella-markup!)

Agreed - that's good general advice but as is true in a lot of financial products there is opportunity for arbitrage. I was wondering if the option existed here, as I am going at the rate of a windshield a year... Not budget breaking of course, but if I can push that expense onto someone else (partially), I am happy to do it!

Not related to your insurance question, but get a quote from Windshield Surgeons near Chinook. My car was quoted at $1200-1400 (dealership and Crystal Glass), and Surgeons did it for just over $500, using the same glass that the OEM re-badges.

+1 for windshield surgeons. Great quality work and usually cheaper.

For the Insurance, I've asked my broker this before. He said he never suggests anyone get it, simply more expensive in the long run. Out of around 2000 customers, 2 have full glass coverage.

I cancelled my glass insurance many moons ago. The cost of the fancy windshields in some vehicles was driving up the premiums for everyone else.

Call 310-glas and get a quote on what your windshield is worth. Then call your broker and get quotes on your comprehensive coverage with and without the second 13d deletion of windshield endorsement with a 250 deductible. The math should spell it out that you are better to self insure unless you live down the street from a gravel pit. You should be able to buy a new windshield every 2 years with the savings or show up to one of those grocery store glass repair guys 4 to 5 times for an easy chip repair. I haven't had a broken windshield in 20 year$. A tiny chip every few years though. Most people shouldn't waste their money in this way.

For my new vehicle I declined it... I have a $500 deductible so it doesn't really make sense for me.

I asked AMA about this, and they use a sort of off policy glass coverage, the good thing about this is making a glass claim has zero effect on your premium.

I believe when I did the math you had to get a new windshield every year to make it worthwhile. I only considered getting it as a way to encourage me to get it repaired when it cracks... easier to ignore if you have to pay a few hundred dollars...
