Matter of time until fighting is out of the game. The resistance is mostly from people whose livelihoods rely on it. It's a shame they've been put in that position, whether you argue they put themselves there or not. Fighting is not necessary, it's barbaric.

In my opinion of course.

So these guys are heros to you, and you want to,see them phased out of the game?

Is it just me or does the OP's post make no sense? (*I normally love Fotze's brazen wit BTW)

They fight for their teammates, not entertainment. Sure there is no higher power or actual war they are fighting for, but there is their own personal pride and the defense of a teammate. GSP has his pride, but he doesn't have a team to protect from cheap shots and slashes

Pretty big stretch unless you got some information I haven't heard. Everytime there's a poll a fighting ban is universally opposed by all players. The latest one was that NHLPA vote where 98% were against removing fighting.

I too am utterly bamboozled. That said, I'd be enraged if they took out fighting. That would be admitting defeat to the soccer moms who want it gone. It's entertaining and is satisfying to see your guy kick the crap out of the other guy. There's a definite place for it in the game, both staged and unstaged (if that's a word?).

There is way too much attention and focus on fighting at this point in the NHL. Let the Empire continue until failure. I for one am the MOB.

Is it more staged now then it was say 10 years ago? Honest question....

On one hand I'm totally against the staged ######-baggery of it, but I also see the need for it to exist, just as a check against things like slashes, high sticks, etc. I really do think that we would see a lot more cheap shots without fighting in the game.

Yeah, I don't get it either.

Although this bit did give me pause:

Is fighting in hockey like war? I sure as hell hate war but understand that it is likely never to end. That doesn't stop me from hating it, nor from hoping and doing my own part to ensure that it doesn't happen.

I don't hate hockey goons, and I don't hate the players who fight. But I do question the place of "fighting", and it seems a lot less necessary and exceptionally more expendable to me than something as truly evil as war.

You know what would be awesome?

Another thread on fighting so we can re-hash the same stupid arguments yet again!

If you wanna see Goons duke it out, then fine so be it. But I am sick of guys having to take punches to the face for making a good hockey play like Stemps did last night. Way to see his teammates had his back too after calling them out. McGrattan should have went after Ference if fighting is still in this free-for-all mode that it seems to be in.

After last night, should we ask what Stempniaks view of fighting is?

I think they should. Dude lost teeth and has a brutal cut from a shot to the face when his gloves still really weren't off. Ference should have got a couple.

My thread got closed but I do think it is a legitimate debate. Suspending fighters for fighting players who A. Completed a clean check and B. The player they fought was unwilling.

They need to start policing this a lot more and need to start handing out suspensions for fights like the Ference/Stempniak fight or like the Emery/Holtby fight.

You want your goons to stay and fight fine. You want fights to still happen on a play that was legitimately dirty, i get it, but still its a reluctant fine from me but last night was as close to assault as you can get IMO and players like Ference need to be held accountable on plays like that.

agreed. Something should be done, and I think the refs have to be held accountable.
