Question Where do you shop for furniture?!

Hello,

I am new to the city for the first time I have moved into an unfurnished apartment. I know nothing about this stuff and I'm wondering where I can get decent stuff that isn't extremely overpriced!

At this moment I'm looking for a bed (headboard, footboard, rails) and I guess a box spring and mattress. I'm also looking for a couch. Hopefully a sectional, but if they are too expensive I will settle for something smaller.

Obviously I will need much more, but these are the essentials for now! Oh, and a night stand if you know where to get a cheap one of those.

Please let me know your thoughts on where you shop, or where possibly to avoid! It would also be nice to know of places that offer free delivery, or some sort of financing options!

Thank you!!

I would check Costco. I have never shopped for furniture in Calgary, but I have had luck there in other cities.

Also, I have bought furniture from The Brick and Leons before. You can find deals, but some of the stuff is overpriced and both stores usually sell the same crap but for some reasons the prices on similar items can vary.

Depends on your tastes.

The Brick/Leons/United Furniture all sell that same "transitional" furniture stuff that clogs suburbanite homes.

Ikea sells pseudo-modernist furniture of dubious quality that may or may not tip over/collapse.

Higher end stuff can be found at places like Revolve, EQ3, Crate & Barrel, The Bay which cater to both transitional and modern tastes, but it's recommended to only buy their show models or "scratch"-room items if you can.

I like going to Nordesign. They're having a sale right now, so there's some pretty good deals going on. I just bought a bed there.

You really love the 80s and the Rosanne aesthetic: Brick/Leons
Cheap and Contemporary: Ikea
Contemporary, but a level above Ikea in quality: EQ3, Revolve
Contemporary, and relatively high in quality: Crate and Barrel
You have a 5,000 square foot house and like oversized everything: Restoration Hardware.
More unique Designer furniture: Lots of places on 11th Ave in Beltline.
High-end Designer furniture with high-end budget: Robert Sweep

West Elm is coming to Chinook soon as well. They are like C+B, but cheaper (in quality and price).

This is a bit more accurate. Do not be fooled by the knock-off furniture from China they sell at a non-knock-off price.

I've had good luck at Bracko Brothers before. Also Crate & Barrel.

I wouldn't touch the Brick with someone else's wallet.

A friend of mines dad runs a furniture store.
http://calgarysofa.com/

My understanding is that most of their furniture is produced locally.

Sojourn, just across from Trail Appliances and Lee Valley. Where all our home furniture came from. Very, very, happy with the bedroom set, dining room table + chairs, kitchen table + chairs, and end tables we've got from them over the years.

I like Ashley Furniture. The stuff seems way better quality than the brick/united/leons. Still the cheaper side of things compared to the very fancy stuff you'd find at designer furniture stores, but a good alternative.

Ethan Allan has some good stuff, but make sure you are getting real wood and not particleboard, and that the tables/nightstands/etc have presentable backs (so that you don't have to orient them against a wall).

Also, consider driving to Nanton and looking at some of the antique shops. They may have some furniture that appeals to you (if you like early 1900's solid wood stuff).

You are probably asking advice in the wrong place. Based on the average income level here, I suspect most CP'ers shop at high end places like Ethan Allans and the like.

Me... I'm not so rich so I do my shopping at Costco, Leons, and Timothy Freds (real nice furniture store in High River).

Calgary Puck! Any deals I have done on here have gone really smoothly, and you save a ton of money on stuff people are trying to get rid of. If you check out the buy/sell threads I think there was a guy selling some Lay-z-boy couches el cheapo!

There's the Furniture Hut, that's on 11th. There's Furniture-R-Us, that's on 11th too. You got Put-Your-Butt-There, that's on 11th. Matter of fact, they're all in the same complex; it's the furniture complex on 11th.

I have only ever bought a recliner and a bed from a store. The rest has all been second hand from relatives or lucking out with great deals from Kijijijijiiji. We also got furniture when we bought our current house, they previous owners were downsizing and we were able to get a few things thrown in. So, try Kijiji, your relatives or buy a house from an elderly downsizing couple!

My wife loves Pottery Barn, she waits for the mint condition floor models to go on sale and buys them at half price.
