Default Group looking to make Canadian anthem more gender neutral

http://www.calgarysun.com/2013/10/01...ral-group-says

Quote:
A group of Canadian women — including former prime minister Kim Campbell and author Margaret Atwood — wants to change the national anthem to make it more gender neutral.
The group, which runs the website RestoreOurAnthem.ca, wants to change the line, "In all thy sons command" to "in all of us command." They say it's very close to the original version of the anthem, which was "in all thou dost command."
The lyrics of Robert Stanley Weir's original English lyrics were changed in 1913. A change to "in all of us command" would "reflect Weir's original, inclusive intentions," the group says

I don't really have an issue with this. I seems to be a natural evolution.

BTW, Sun reader commetns coming up trumps again.

Or, people can have an understanding that the original lyrics offer insight into the the original intent of the anthem.

Furthermore, NEWS BULLETIN: "Group seeks hobby, states reasons as: too much free time on hands. Crochet and knitting among top recommendations, Lawn Darts 'not too distant third.'"

I don't have an issue with changing it, but why change it to the new lyrics instead of simply returning to the original? 'In all of us' simply doesn't fit the language of the piece.

Ah, if I'm ever in doubt on how to feel about a certain subject I read the Sun comments and feel the exact opposite.

Yeah it just doesn't sound right. Plus, "doust" would be a lot more fun to say.

They should change it to be gender biased towards females instead. That would be hot.

If they want to pay for the costs of reprinting everything then fine, otherwise its a waste of money.

Not everything needs to be changed.

Good to see Kim Campbell is still trying to make people forget about her political career.

Isnt: "In all thy sons command" a reference to Jesus? What do hardline Christians have to say about this?

I agree. If you're going to do anything, change it back to the original wording.

Yeah, no kidding. True patriot love in all of us command. How is that in any way grammatically correct? Wouldn't our be the word they are looking for?

Same. Prefer going with that than their suggestion.

Wait until Kanye West demands that there should be a rap background to our national anthem and all of his 6 Canadian fans demand that change

Oh Canada uh uh
Our home and native land - yeah yeah
True Patriot love - East Coast West coast yeah
In all thy suns command - huh huh

With glowing hearts - In da hood
We see the rise -in my pants in my pants
The true north strong and free - Free ya'll
From far and wide - Big Booty yeah
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee - Get yer gat out
God keep our land - and puffy
Glorious and free - uh huh uh huh
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee - again again
Oh Canada we stand on guard for thee - for all my homies out there.

Yo Yo Yo

My favorite anthem is Australia's, almost entirely because it includes the word "girt"

Personally, I'd like it to lose the religion. There was a proposal to replace "God keep our land glorious and free" with "O Canada, glorious and free" that I liked.

I think the actual meaning of "True patriot love in all thy sons command" is that true patriot love should command all of the sons of Canada.

In this context, the original, "in all thou dost command" has a slightly different meaning: true patriot love should reside in all that are commanded by Canada - presumably all of the residents. Canada is personified here.

As such, a better modernization should be "in all that you command" (where you refers to Canada).

That's my take, anyway.
