hmm. interesting pick.
thought it would for sure be Hall, and perhaps somewhat ridiculous (in my opinion) rumours of gagne.
this option is likely better than either.

I'm sure it was just as weird when Steve Smith was named Flames captain back in the day.
I used to like Ference. Now he is Soiled.

I reckon it's gotta be a slap in the face for many of the Oilers when the new guy shows up and becomes captain. Just proves there isn't good leadership in the land of snot and mucous. With all those 50 million dollar contracts they handed out, I guess none of them are good enough to be the leader? That's pathetic IMO to pay out all the dough to that many guys and you don't have one worthy of wearing the C. Good luck to Andrew as he's a great guy, but I hope they land in the cellar again this year!

I think it's more a statement about what kind of guy Okotoker is.
We may not have lost a top 4 defenceman when we traded him away, but we certainly lost a lot of the personality and drive of that 04 team. You saw it in how he played, how he was willing to trust Sutter and take a lower contract, and how he conducted himself on CP.
Good for him.
I now hate him though.

Doesn't say much for the players that were in Edmonton.

What does that say about the amount of leadership all those top picks are able to provide if Ference is able to walk in and become captain. Lots of talent in Edmonton without any of the intangibles it takes to win. They're still going to be a crappy team for a long time with a core like that.

Bahaha. He'll be run out of town much like the two captains before him when the fans realize how terrible that contract is.

If that's true then that kid is never going to be a winner.

I had not heard that. I guess it makes some sense if Hall didn't want it as I don't see any of the other young guys as Captain types.
I guess there isn't much on the roster outside of Hall that seems like an obvious fit. Smid is insanely overrated by Oiler fans and would seem like a possibility and I guess Ryan Smyth is still there.
I can't remember Ference ever even wearing an A anywhere so it seems odd to bring in a new guy who hasn't been a clear leader on his previous teams and make him the A.

Why not?
Whether he thinks he is ready for the C or not has nothing to do with his play on the ice. Plenty of guys have played huge roles for their teams and not worn a letter.
I would say Patrick Kane should never be captain of the Hawks and should recognize that himself but I think he has been fine in terms of being a winner so far.

Eberle seems like he could've been a consideration. One of the "older" guys of their core and seems like a generally solid guy.

Weird they wouldn't pick Smyth... Maybe it's his final season? Is his contract up this year?

This.
Ference is a consumate pro, and watching him even after he went to Boston, he exudes all the qualities of a leader....something very much lacking in Edmonton.
This has "good signing" written all over it in July, and now looks to be even better as he is precisely what that team has needed for a long time now. He is a "been there, done that" guy that none of the young bucks can question even a little bit.
I fear that team is truly now on the right track to start making noise in this league.
Hate it too.
