Flames Training Camp Predictions & Discussion

Training camp is here at last, so it's only fitting we have a training camp prediction thread to start fueling the conversation.

It's a wide open battle. Lots of players on the fringe looking to crack the roster this season, but far fewer spots there to fill, so they will have to impress. But all will be given the opportunity to do so.

Horak, Cundari, Knight, Reinhart, Granlund, Monahan, Begin, Ferland, Hanowski, Jones, Ramage, Street, Bouma, Byron, Breen, Sieloff, Wotherspoon, Culkin, Russel, Jooris
for only a handful of roster spots.

Ramo, Berra, Ortio, MacDonald
to decide the Starting/Backup positions in net.

Who are your picks?

Ramo wins the starting role with MacDonald being his backup.

Monohan plays 10 games with the Flames before being send back to junior.

Sieloff earns spot on the team as a 6th defenceman.

Granlund starts with the Flames but ends up in Abby.

Granlund only starting playing down the middle last season, he's one guy I could see converted back to wing to start in the NHL or permanently. Based on a strong rookie camp him and Ferland have an outside shot. Would love to see Monahan make a case, ditto for a guy on the blueline.

One or two injuries usually happen up front so we should see a handful of young guys start the season up front.

I'd be ecstatic if those players earned those spots.

After watching the rookie tourny i don't think any of those players are ready for the NHL.

Going from the list in the first post by "djsFlames" i would say Horak ends up being 3rd line center.

If Bouma is healthy he gets a 4th line spot. If he is not, then Reinhart and Knight will battle it out for his spot. I liked Granlund in tourny, but i don't see him as a 4th line player.

On D, it's just going to be players on one way contracts. No Seiloff, no Wotherspoon, no Cundari.

Ramo and McDonald will be the goalies to start.

The real youth movement starts next year. This year is to see if any of the younger vets get to be part of it.

Not that I disagree with Granlund not being converted to a winger in the NHL, but I believe he is a natural center that was converted to wing for his first year in the FEL to play with his brother, and then returned to his natural position this past year. I do think he will end up being a winger in the NHL though.

My picks:

Glencross - Backlund - Cammy
Baertschi - Stajan - Hudler
Galiardi - Granlund - Stempniak
Ferland - Bouma - Jones
Jackman - McGrattan

Wideman - Brodie
Giordano - Butler
Cundari - Breen
O'Brien

Ramo
MacDonald

Flames definitely have some extras that need to be traded this season.

I hope not, because 9 games is the max, not 10, following which his ELC will burn off a year!

Off topic I suppose, but is Ottawa supposed to be a better team this year?

I'm fairly confident one of either Wotherspoon or Sieloff will make the big club

I hope Bouma comes back strong from his knee injury. It was a pretty terrible one.

I don't think any of the kids will make it. And to be honest. It's probably for the best. Bring them along slow.

Kids who make the Flames out of camp:
Berra (gets the Start opening night.)
Knight (mediocre showing this week but ramps up his play in main camp)
Granlund ( Keeps improving steadily from prospect camp into main camp and the coaches reward him with a spot to start the season. His season will be very similar to Horaks first year)
Monahan ( Gets five games up with the Flames before they decide finishing the season in juniors is best for him. Dominated the WJC inspired by the send down)

A friend of mine close to the team says Monahan gets a full time roster spot this season. I think he said Hanowski and Cundari as well.

None of those decisions have been made yet. That's what training camp is for. Your friend is speculating, no matter how "close" to the team he is

Unlikely. Consensus is he probably gets traded to a contender for the memorial cup sometime during the season so he has a chance to show off a bit of savvy in the playoffs.

It is really tough to pencil-in some of the rookies that appear to be close or that even have NHL experience when writing down the roster. Flames still have a lot of vets left, and I think they will end up making some moves throughout the season.

Horak - Abbotsford (First call up)
Cundari - Abbotsford
Knight - Calgary - 3rd line
Reinhart - Abbotsford
Granlund - Calgary - 3rd line (RW)
Monahan - Calgary - 9 games
Begin - Abbotsford
Ferland - Calgary - 4th line
Hanowski - Abbotsford
Jones - Abbotsford
Ramage - Calgary - 5/6th D
Street - Abbotsford
Bouma - Abbotsford
Byron - Abbotsford
Breen - Abbotsford
Sieloff - Junior
Wotherspoon - Abbotsford
Culkin - Junior
Russel - Calgary - 7th D
Jooris - Abbotsford

Ramo - Calgary - Starter
Berra - Abbotsford
Ortio - Calgary - Backup
Macdonald - Starts out as 3rd goalie, later traded or Abbotsford
Brossoit - Alaska

I think Ramage is showing more progression and experience on the ice than the other young d-men, will earn a spot. Cundari may get several games, he will be close. Ortio forces mgmt's hand.
