Yahoo Ranks the Top 30 Starting Goalies
At #1 they've got Quick, followed by Lundqvist, Rinne, and Rask.
Here's what they had to say about the Flames:
Quote:
And then there’s Miikka Kiprusoff. He hasn’t officially retired, but all signs indicate the longtime Flames netminder is calling it a career. So, we went with Karri Ramo as Calgary’s starter and the 27-year-old Finnish fill-in comes in at No. 30 on this list. Hey, somebody had to. Remember, it doesn’t mean he’s a bad goalie. Not for a minute. After all, Martin Brodeur, one of the very best goalies in the history of the game, didn’t even make the list.
|
Quote:
30. Karri Ramo, Calgary
It looks like the Kiprusoff era is over in Calgary. Ramo is the leading candidate to take over. He’s had a few cups of coffee in the NHL over the years, ultimately ending up back in Europe. The Flames are desperately hoping he figures it out this time.

The Flames deserve the #30 ranking until proven otherwise.

Yeah, can't argue too much with that. Hope one of our goalies plays well enough to be higher than #30 for the next list.

I hope this isn't a reverse-"look good on paper" situation, where Ramo surprises, and we end up in 9th again

1. You can't finish 9th in a seven team division.
2. It would be just terrible if the Flames were better than you hoped.

Flames can still finish "9th" - best record outside the playoffs.
It will be interesting to see who gets more starts in NJ. Barring injuries, I predict 45 for Marty and 37 Schneider.
I think lounge ranking might be optimistic...his ceiling is probably a 6-10 goalie in the league, but he's more likely 15th.
Howard and Elliott are a little low IMO.

There are still Western and Eastern Conferences, are there not?

Yes, but it is a divisional playoff. First plays fourth, second plays third, give or take the wild cards

I may be wrong, but I was under the impression the top division winner played the worst wild card team. And there is a chance that you can have 5 teams from one division and only 3 from the other, so it's not a division-only playoff.

No, you're right, but there is no 9th in the conference anymore. It is still a divisional playoff, just as the CFL format is. The wildcard just acts to prevent an inferior 4th place team in one division from qualifying at the expense of a better 5th place one in the other. The point is, all of CP's posters who desire failure should be updating their whine to "oh noes, what if we finish 5th in the Pacific?"

Finishing last in the division is pretty much a given. Flames fans will be looking league wide to see what their position is. Even though there were conferences last year, i doubt many after the deadline were looking where the flames ranked in the conference.
Also its not " desire failure", it's called "looking at it objevtively".

Accepting that the Flames are likely to finish 7th in the Pacific is looking at it objectively.
Fearing that the team could finish higher than that is desiring failure.
Actively arguing that Ramo proving to be a good NHL goaltender and causing the team to finish above expectations would be a bad thing is simply asinine.

Howard still horribly underrated. Guess it's the whole stigma of a Detroit goalie.
Not a bad list though. Definitely a few I'd shuffle around, but not out to lunch by any means.

You forgot Braden Holtby at #20 who actually got invited to the Olympic camp over Ward.
