My first year of touring, my speech started out with playing this video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKs0oEIVOck
I have stopped showing that clip because it is simplistic, condescending and for most people, just plain wrong. I like your terminology better... Alter your diet is different than eating less and going to the gym is different than moving more.
But the clip does show what people will try to lose weight in order to shortcut the process. People took years to put on the weight and seem to want to lose it in 2 weeks. Not going to happen.
My new talk is (1) giving my advice on how to best lose weight in a reasonable way and (2) express WHY people should lose the weight. Most people are not sufficiently motivated to lose the weight. If you are happily married, have a good job, are set financially, and are generally happy with your life, there is little motivation to change. You could say health reasons, but most people are not that forward thinking and are not going to make any change until the doctor tells them they have diabetes or they have a heart attack. So I try to express to people how good you feel when you are fit. It was exhilarating to climb Mt. Wilcox when I was out your way. I love having the energy to go out and do so many more things.
