Water Spill on Laptop
Just spilled water on my laptop....is it screwed? Will this dry and get better? Functionally it seems fine except the wet patch behind the screen. NSFW for size.
Funny thing is I literally just got a new battery for this thinking it'd still last me a while (2008 macbook). Will Apple allow me to return an opened battery?

Longer you leave it on, the longer you risk damage as water seeps in further. If you are concerned about your data you could pull your HDD out. No idea how hard that is on Macbook though.

So in an interesting turn of events...my screen has gone from what is in the first post, to this:
Only a few little specs are left on the screen and its largely become visible again. The macbook is working as normal.
What's happening here? Is the moisture drying up? Will the last few specs dry up too? Is my macbook actually surviving this incident?
I was all set to buy a new one last night, but if this continues to work I might just have the luxury of waiting a while.

How much water did you spill on it? If your worried about your data I agree with Rathji and take the drive out. Goto ifixit.com for a teardown and see if your comfortable with that. Rice isn't the best solution it can make it worse, your best bet is to bring it to a technician and have them take it apart and clean it as best as possible. The longer you wait the less chance of having success as the liquid creates a chemical reaction on the circuit board. I work as a computer tech and I've seen it all and sometimes the unit will end up being fine while other times it works for days/weeks/months.

^^^ I spilled a lot on it, like a full glass directly on the keyboard. I've already done a time machine backup onto an external drive so I'm not concerned about my data.
I've been using it tonight, using the CD drive, surfing...everything works except it has the spots on the screen.
Probably not worth taking for repair as its a 2008 macbook...I'm probably due for new one anyways. The only thing is Im taking a course next week that I'll need it for, so if this one can survive for another week it'll be really handy. I can't get a new macbook (with the configuration I want) delivered in time for the course.
Next thread...what macbook should I get as a replacement

I did the exact same thing back in February, but it was to my 2010 MacBook Pro.
I had the same thought as you, and decided to turn it on to try and backup everything, just in case. It appeared to work fine for a couple minutes, but soon blacked out, so I had to take it in. No water got in my screen, like yours did, but my RAM was fried (while the hard drive was fine). It only took them about a day to get it back to me, but that was also for nigh $900.
I'd have suggested not to turn it on for a while, as Rathji said, but since it's too late for that and everything seems to be in working order, I guess I wouldn't worry about it. I agree that you might as well simply replace it if and when it gives out on you.

I'd actually recommend you go with 8GB of RAM and here's why - you're not the power user that needs 8GB today, you are at the other end of the spectrum - you're a casual/typical user that hangs on to their gear for a long time (otherwise you'd have upgraded that plastic macbook a long time ago)
So you want to get that 8GB of RAM to make sure the laptop lasts you the 4+ years you are likely to hang on to it. Given that the Air is a nice, highly capable, well made machine, and that your macbook served you well until the swimming lesson, it's quite likely the Air will be a purchase you keep for a long time.

Yup agree with the 8GB, it's really tough tho since you can't get one locally so it totally kills the impulse buy reward.
The 13" Retina MBP isn't that much bigger than the air and the retina display is eyeball melting. Check them out in store, there's a 8GB refurbished one available too.

I see what you're saying but now I think I might even go base model with just 128 gb and 4 gb ram. The price is right and it'll blow away what I was already using. I can always use external storage for some of my media.
I can see myself upgrading sooner next time so maybe pay a little less for what does the job now, and in 3 to 4 years get whatever the latest and greatest is.

Hahaha. Well okay, the 4 GB of RAM was about $150. Looking back at the receipt, there was also the motherboard they needed to replace which came in close to 500, along with a new keyboard and trackpad it all added up.

I'd go with the 8GB even if you plan to upgrade sooner, you will get more for your computer when you go to upgrade. Keep in mind how small the 128GB drive is because you will fill that up in no time.
Never keep all your data on 1 external HDD, if you intend to store your stuff on an external make a backup of that drive. I see too many people who use an external for storage and it dies on them and they are stuck will a 600-1600 bill to recover their data.

Got the base spec Macbook Air. Using it right now. Holy hell is this thing amazing compared to my old plastic macbook. I guess I really was behind the times.
I've taken all the advice about RAM and storage space into consideration. The Apple store told me I can return it within 14 days, so if I start having any reservations I might end up taking it back and ordering the higher spec. I'll put it through its paces in terms of what I need from it and go from there.

They defiantly are nice, the macbook air is typically supposed to be a complimentary computer. One to use while your on the go however it totally depends on your usage of the computer. If you just check your email and surf the web space will not be an issue. Enjoy your new purchase!
