That is a great signing considering they are eating up some of his UFA years.

The Rangers have 12 UFAs next offseason, potentailly 13 if they buy out Richards next buyout period. Only 5 players signed.

That is pretty crazy.

Incredible cap hit. Makes the Wideman signing look bad.

Amazing cap hit. Would have given him an offer sheet at that price. I thought he would sign for 5.5 M at a minimum.

One was a RFA and the other was the UFA. Thus the difference. If McDonagh was a UFA he would be making more than Wideman.

I remember seeing that trade and couldn't believe Montreal had given up anything remotely half decent for Scott fricken Gomez (let alone a former first rounder). If you think the Phaneuf trade was bad, this one was ten times worse, yet you never really hear about it. I have no idea what Bob Gainey (I assume he was still Montreal's GM) was thinking that day.

Even with $6.5 million they will still be tight. Have to think Stepan is asking for a big payday, he was pretty much a PPG last season.

I think its actually pricey. Yes he is a steady D but they are paying for future potential. The guy needs to crack the 40+ point range to make this a decent deal. if he continues with his low 30 range points...its expensive.

I still can't believe that Gomez got traded for this guy. The 11th overall pick...for the rights to buy out Gomez's contract. Hilarious.

Really? Guy played over 24 minutes a game (22nd in the league) and was a +13. It's not just about point output, although his number are ok (42nd in defense scoring). He is a top pairing guy on almost any team in the NHL, with a cap hit under 5M. I really dont think you are paying for potential here, that's fair value now with potential to be a bargain pretty soon.

I dont remember if this was a wild rumour or was actually reported somewhere, but the rumour I heard was that Gainey was essentially forced to acquire Scott Gomez as a condition of keeping Brian Gionta.

Essentially, Gionta and Gomez are best friends and Gionta said he wouldnt stay and play in Montreal unless he got to play with Gomez, so Gainey had to go out and acquire him.
