Flames Forget "Young Guns", Meet the "Mean Guns"

There's been some talk about this in a lot of threads recently, so thought I'd create a dedicated thread to it.

Personally, I must say that I'm very pleased with the recent acquisitions arranged by Feaster & Co. It seems like they've learned from the team up north about how you don't go through a rebuild.

We've gotten younger, bigger, and one can assume that the new guys are going to compete every shift in every game. We might not be a playoff team (anything outside the bottom 6 in the league would surprise me) but it's clear that we're not going to give points away for free just because we're in a rebuild.

I'm optimistic about the future because of the fact that they actually seem to building a team.

IIRC last season we were the smallest team in the NHL. Glad to see that will be changed but WTF were they doing? Yeah here it is, the lightest team in the NHL. 15 lbs lighter on average than San Jose.

http://mirtle.blogspot.ca/2013/01/20...t-and-age.html

On the plus side we were only the 14th oldest.

They should be offering incentive to any of the young players who train with Gary Roberts in the off-season.

I don't know how exclusive it is to be actually trained by Roberts (and not just a member of his fitness center) or how expensive it is but Stamkos, Skinner, Neal, and Connolly have all added between 15 to 30 pounds since their drafts. Don't know how much can be attributed to Roberts himself as he hasn't been in business too long but his first mentee in Stamkos was a pretty good way to start off his profile.

I'd love to see Baertschi reaching towards 200 pounds after training with Roberts for the next couple years. And people love to bring up former short Flames St. Louis and Fleury as reasons why Gaudreau can succeed but forget that their playing weights are closer to 180 and Gaudreau is listed at 150 in most places. Once he turns pro, I'd do near anything to see him use a signing bonus to be trained by Roberts. Janowski at 6'3'' and 170 pounds could stand to add an extra pound or several dozen as well.

Can't really give any incentive but extra cash on their next contracts or offer them 1-way contracts instead of a 2-way if they're near that cusp if they use up their summer time on training. And especially the guys who are already in Ontario for the off-season, like probably Monohan and Janowski, should be looking into it.

Edit: double post, oops.

Or the Flames could just work with Roberts to develop and license a similar training regime and them make that mandatory for their prospects to follow. They could even include a question in their interview process about the willingness to follow specific health, nutrition and development strategies. Save ton of money and have more control over monitoring what is being done by your assets.

What exactly is this based on? I get it, "Oilers bad, Flames good" but beyond obvious homerism, how are we doing anything better than they have? I think this thread is really premature at this point, especially when you consider the fact that we have the worst team on paper and no elite prospects in our cupboard.

More than happy if he is, but who's listing him at that?

Pretty hard to gain 10 pounds during the season, and it's only been a couple months. I'm sure he'll reach 190 and beyond here before he touches NHL ice but I'm not sure he's there yet.

Sure. But following training regimes during the off-season, especially for all the prospects, is wishful thinking. Coming home to mom's cooking and staying out late partying with friends you haven't seen in awhile...

Some have the drive like Iginla and those Roberts is training, others like to vacation like Byfuglien during the off-season. With little monitoring and prospects all over the place, it would be a lot more efficient to actually have those who are determined to get the hands-on approach. At least in my opinion.

They are giving us something fresh to watch. That's good.

Im a true fan, I don't care if their record sucks or not. I just want entertainment.

My company upgraded our seats, so I am hoping to see at least 20 games (but I'll go to as many as I can). If you work at a company with 200 or more employees and can make HR or finance or IT decisions and want a meal and a game, just PM me.

I don't believe that it is possible to put together and ice a team simply based on 1st overall picks, which some Oilers-supporters seem(ed) to think. You need to put together a good team around them that has grit, compete, and can start to foster a good culture.

The way Feaster & Co are going at the rebuild (we can argue about the return for Iginla etc.) seems to indicate that they're aiming for that (2-3 years too late though) and have an idea about how to do it.

If ots weight gain you want our players to achieve, consult Mr. Byfuglien. He can show em how to gain 30 lbs real quick.
