NBC sets ratings record with Wings/Hawks game 7
Quote:
The NBC Sports Network set a record.
It might not stand for very long.
The cable channel had a 2.07 national rating, its highest for an NHL broadcast, with 3,354,000 viewers tuning in to watch Chicago beat Detroit 2-1 in overtime of Game 7 Wednesday night.
Its previous record in seven-plus years of carrying NHL games was a 1.97 rating set on June 2, 2010, when Chicago played Philadelphia in the Stanley Cup finals.
''We live by numbers every day and what this tells us is that the NHL is on a roll in this country,'' NBC Sports president of programing Jon Miller said Thursday. ''While the lockout was unfortunate, we're seeing that hockey has some impressive momentum. We're really excited and encouraged by the continued growth in interest of the game and how people are finding the games on the NBC Sports Network.
''Now, we're poised for what should be great conference finals.''

Things should only go up from here considering the teams and markets they are in. Good stuff.

Should be more records set as the playoffs continue. This is like a dream come true for the NHL with the 4 teams they have left.

If you ask Ovechkin I'm sure he will tell you it was fixed.

I always like to see the comparatives on TV ratings.
This certainly great for the NHL. It needs this. Its kind of why I secretly cheer for big market US teams, it gets the game we all love the recognition it deserves.
But those ratings are probably a fraction of what Big Bang Theory reruns get.

The NHL should add laugh tracks.

Can anyone provide some context? What type of TV audiences do MLB/NBA/NFL get? What about a typically popular TV show?

Remember that time there was a lockout and a lot of people and media said the impact would be catastrophic on the league?

This article is a couple of years old, but Monday Night Football drawing 9.7 million viewers is "below average" and the Yankees in the MLB playoffs get over 11 million viewers

If they didn't get their #### together and get a deal done in time to have a shortened season, it would have. No one remembers partial lockouts

Not sure why it needs to be compared to anything other than previous NHL ratings...thats what the idea of growing the game is all about. Being better than you were, not better than something else that you have no chance of beating...ever.
But to answer your questions this game culled just under half the audience that the 4th Miami Heat/Indiana Pacer game did.

When Iginla was traded to Pittsburgh one thing that excited me was the prospect of watching games on NBC.

Strangely enough, two Big Bang Theory re-runs were the only thing on cable that had higher numbers in the 18-49 age range on Wednesday, but not by much. The hockey game had more total viewers than anything else on cable Wednesday night: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...y-more/185066/

The hockey game had 3,354,000 total viewers. Tuesday night's NBA game had 8,122,000 total viewers. http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...l-more/184955/
Actually, the 3.3 million is the average for the whole game, the number peaked at 4.613 million for the OT: http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...etwork/185246/

Probably true, but that fails to take into account the bigger picture (no pun intended) on the current state of network television. There is a reason why every network has been buying and rolling out more cable sports channels (Fox is launching another national channel in August) - because sports is just about the only thing left that guarantees live viewership and therefore, a captive audience for advertisers.
Advertisers would look at that as 3 million eyeballs on their ads, while even with twice the overall viewership, your typical sitcom might end up with fewer people seeing the ads due to PVRs and people watching later and skipping them. The advertising rates for sports, even hockey, is likely higher than those shows. And in the case of NFL and the like, vastly higher.

In the bad news department, MLB lost the head to head matchup with the NHL. Yeah, that's right: the NHL beat MLB, and it wasn't even close. Saturday night's Blackhawks-Red Wings Game 5 on NBC drew 2.9 million viewers, and picked up a 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demo, compared to just 0.5 for MLB in the same demo.

Interesting that the blogger there specifically failed to mention that it was a game 7 playoff game between two huge hockey markets going up against random early-season baseball match-ups.
Though the overall decline in network TV viewership for baseball is hardly new.
