Sound does not work

I'm running xp and to my knowledge I did not change anything but the sound does not work. No system sounds or when I run mp3 or movie clip file. What is strange though is when I ran the link to a flash file from photon it did work. I remember this happening to me years ago on 95, but I have no idea what I did to fix it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

tech support mode:
are you speakers plugged in? are they turned on?
plug a pair of headphones into the speaker port in your computer, check those.
If not:
go into start, control panel, sounds and audio devices
check device volume, check speaker volume.
make sure mute is not checked.
Go to audio, check the sound there as well.

I have checked most of that stuff, and like I said it works when I clicked on the flash link that photon posted recently, but not right away. I had to right click for a menu and adjust volume on the flash page. Thanks for your suggestions.
