DET Finalizing 6-Yr $31.8M Extension with Howard
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=420473
Too much for too long if you ask me. Howard's 29 and the cap hit of $5.3M is too much especially when the ceiling is not getting higher. He's a good goalie but I would've pegged him at around $4.5M each for 4 years.

Good, hopefully Datsyuk leaves and the Wings are terrible like they deserve to be.
Or if Datsyuk stays, maybe we can sign Filpula as a FA?

why did Detriot finally decide to suck and start making dumb transactions AFTER they leave our conference? FFS.

Cap hit is about right but it is two to three years too long.
Teams need to start realizing that long term for goalies is a bad risk.

Pretty sure Filp will be looking for at least $5 million per season on a multi-year deal. I'm hoping the Flames are trying to get rid of bad contracts, not bringing more on board.

We'll see how smart Holland really is when he is no longer blessed with miracle late-round draft picks becoming all stars, and when free agents no longer want to go to DET for a discount.

Howard just isn't that great a goalie. 5.3 is kind of a lot for what he brings. The term isn't great either.

Is Howard a top10 goaltender in the league?
Honestly, cause I don't know enough about him.
If he is, fair deal.

Overpayment. Almost makes the Luongo deal look good.

No, I don't think so.
This year, he's finally playing on a decent, but not great, Lidstromless and is .917 and 2.41, which is good for about 20th. Last year he was around 10th. The year before he was .908 and 2.79 in 63 GP, which is outside the top 30 and "mediocre backup" territory. The year before that, he was well inside the top 10 with a .924 sv%, but the Wings were a different team.
I would say the performance you're seeing this year is roughly in line with what I'd expect from him given the makeup of the Red Wings going forward. That is to say, a roughly-average NHL starter.

Contract is too Luongo-esque. Detroit may regret this one down the road

Brutal contract for a mid-level goaltender at best.

Howard could have the worst five hole among starters in the NHL right now.

It does appear that he's having to pay his own players more, and can't have his pick of UFA guys to sign.
Which does bring up the question...should the Wings be looking to move out a Datsyuk, or Zetterberg for more prospects if this team is done winning Stanley Cups. A lot of people are ripping on the Flames for not trading Iginla, Kiprusoff, and the likes 3 years ago. Detroit is a better team, and still in the playoff mix. But these guys are on the downside now, and do they have the players to become an elite team in the next couple of years?

This reeks of desperation. Don`t like it. On second thought though it`s not exactly a mega hit or a huge length. It flies in the face of Detroits philosophy of cheap goaltending though. Well see how the Wings hold up with no Lidstrom tho, won`t we?

They should be but outside of Zetterberg and Kronwall they don't have much to move.
Hearsay is that Datsyuk is going to return to Russia very soon so I doubt teams are looking closely into him. Franzen has a Luongo bad contract, and Flippula is a UFA.
It is being overlooked but this Detroit team is old, and lacks depth. They have some pieces coming up the pipeline but nobody that looks like a star. Their is a reason they didn't give up the first for Bouwmeester, they are aware they need to start drafting some pieces again.

Zetterberg at 32 with at least 5 years of 7.5M (cap hit of over 6) is virtually untradeable.
What would you want to give up to get him on the Flames?

A PPG player for almost the last decade, who is also a great two way player, and an excellent leader.
Yeah virtually untradeable sounds about right
Most of the top 10-15 players in the league are untradeable I guess.
