Should put the players in white text, seen them right away without even thinking about it.

Also of note:

Player 1: $3.5 million cap hit, $2.5 million salary
Player 2: $5.75 million cap hit, $8.4 million salary

Answer: Player one, looking at the stats lines and salary/cap hit make up, no question

When you see who they are, your mind starts to melt a little haha

I think Team +/- should also be noted.

Player 1's team is currently collectively -49 (-90/48 games)
Player 2's team is collectively +38 (+70/48 games)

Real small sample size here... I wouldn't get too excited or anything about this. LA would still pick Richards 10 times out of 10 for a cup run.

Too small of a sample size.

Over the last 4 regular seasons:
Player 1: 245GP, 36G, 87A, 123Pts, +2, 0 Stanley Cups
Player 2: 263 GP, 79G, 111A, 190Pts, +4, 1 Stanley Cup

Given that plus minus is a completely useless statistic, I guess the guy with more goals...

Not to mention Pepper busted out "Stanley Cups". That is an incredibly useless stat.

If Matt Stajan played the way he is playing this season for the entirety of his contract he'd be an excellent value, but prior to this season he was an absolute plug.

I picked the first player, but I was thinking it was a defenseman at first, while I assumed the 2nd one was a forward. I don't know why I assumed that.

Stats in general can be difficult to go by without context.

Basically there's almost no way to do this kind of blind analysis. You would need some pretty granular stats to judge what the player actually DOES on the ice. Can we see ice time per game? PK/PP usage? Quality of competition? PDO? Corsi rate?

... No, just +/- and points? K.

Player 1: 14.94 minutes/60, Corsi QoC: 2.222, Corsi Relative to Team (on-ice minus off-ice): 4.7, On-Ice Corsi: 1.08, Offensive starts: 42.3%

Player 2: 12.05 minutes/60, Corsi QoC: -0.666, Corsi Relative to Team (on-ice minus off-ice): -5.4, On-Ice Corsi: 13.21, Offensive starts: 55.0%

Yeah, I'm no stats genius but those numbers favor Stajan in a pretty major way, do they not?

Mostly. These say that Player 1 (Stajan) plays more minutes (/60), more in his own end (offensive starts), and more against harder opponents (Corsi QoC). Compared to his team, he does better (Relative to team). The one standout is that Player 2 (Richards) has a higher raw Corsi value, meaning that his time out has a more dominant performance in shots than Player 1. However, this is can be combined with the Relative Corsi to point out that Player 2 also plays on an amazing team if, when he's at 13 on-ice Corsi, it's still below the team's average.

The conclusion I draw is that Player 1 is doing well on a poor team, while Player 2 may be getting it done, but is also on a strong team, which may mask his weaknesses.

Da_Cheif, if you're going to put the answers in white, you don't need all the empty space.

If that was like comparing Iggy and S-Faced right now, I'd still take Iggy. But, now that I've looked at the result, I'd still take Richards over Stajan. The +/- stat can be deceiving since that stat is not like a goals stat where it is purely a single player number. The +/- doesn't show who the player is playing with or who's playing in goal or what lines they're playing against.
