I'm almost finshed building my deck. I budgeted $700.00 and It ended up costing me over $1100.00

Is this a familiar story to anyone? Talk about bad budgeting.....but its going to look nice though so its worth it!

Cant remember what my parents paid for ours but my dad is a carpenter so all we had to pay for was the wood.

I built one three years ago 14x12 that was elevated for a bi-level that cost just over $1000 with treated lumber. But the price of building materials has really gone up in the past three years. That same year I build a fence around 200 linear feet of regular lumber that cost about $1500 by the time I had the posts drilled, and the fence painted. Last year 120 lineal feet of treated fence cost me like $2200.

Depends how big your deck was. Best way to go about it is go to a place like Home Depot and have them print a deck package up for you. After you drop a bunch of the useless crap they have included in there packages the price will be fairly close. Im building a 14x18 deck in my yard this summer, I expect it to be around $1300 bones.

looking at the bill of materials for the one I built last year, grand total was $1410.00...that included gst. This was for treated lumber, large joists (2x10), the whole railing, concrete, sonotubes etc.......went with the 5/4x5 decking with the rounded edges. The deck size was 15'x13'

Well thats it! The deck is done! It ends up being 10x20 ft. Today I installed some lattice above some of the railing to give some privacy from the neighbours. I used treated wood as well and also went with the bevelled 1x6 for the railings and floor.

Now about that fence........

Mine was about $2000 for cedar decking and pretreated structure. Just think of it as putting that money in the bank while enjoying the deck too.
Thats true, even though I spend a bit on this i'll bet I can add another 5000.00 to the value of my house!
