Default Logomyway.com?

Starting a new business. Anyone have experience using an online logo contest like www.logomyway.com?

Tips?
Things to avoid?
Does price really make a difference? (like does a $500 contest get practically as high a quality response as a $800 contest)
Any horror stories?

I don't have any experience with that company, but there is a new Canadian based company that is doing something similar and its far, far cheaper as it's just getting off the ground.

The degree to which designers despise these types of services is well known, so I won't go too deep into it. In my opinion if you're serious about your business you should sit down with somebody and flesh out an actual plan for the face of your business. Using a contest is certainly one way to get your logo, but what you save up front could cost you down the road. There are several possible issues that can arise with a logo, and a professional will be able to alert you of them and help you steer clear.

I've met with several people who've used contest sites before, and in my opinion none of them got what they paid for. Most of them can't explain what the logo elements represent or why they're being used ("I don't know, it's just a marble thing" was my favourite).

I just recommend you talk to a couple designers and get a feel for what they might be able to do for you. If you feel the contest offers a higher value, then have at 'er.

i have to agree with Russic

being in the industry i am (embroidery), we see hundreds of logos every month... and it's pretty easy to pick out the ones where a professional was involved... they just look, well.... professional

not only that, but someone who does this kind of thing day in and day out will likely know a lot of the limitations of logo applications.... whether it be for embroidery, screen print, business cards, letterhead, decals, coffee mugs, pens, etc.

there was a recent 'incident' in kelowna where one of the local high schools got busted by an NCAA school for copyright infringement (yea... taking an NCAA logo and changing a colour and using it for your school logo is not the wisest move!!!)

a logo was developed by a professional graphic company and it is off the chart awesome - just an absolutely fantastic design. while that logo was being developed the school had a 'design a new logo competition' for the students. i don't know all the ins and outs, but for what ever reason the school went with the 'student made' logo... and it's... well... definitely designed by a 16 year old kid with very very very little experience. i wish i could post pics of the designs so you could see what i mean, but i'm not allowed.

so yea - use a professional!

buckmeup.com
Doesn't fiverr.com do the same thing?
