Default Republican congressman says evolution comes from the pit of hell

http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2...t-of-hell?lite

Quote:
U.S. Rep. Paul Broun's view that the theories of evolution and the big bang are "lies straight from the pit of Hell" is getting more exposure than he might have expected, thanks to a video that was made at a church-sponsored banquet in Georgia and distributed by a progressive political watchdog group.
Quote:
The Georgia Republican is already well-known as an outspoken conservative Christian, due in part to his unsuccessful campaign to have 2010 declared "the Year of the Bible." But the latest comments have taken on an extra dab of controversy because Broun, a medical doctor, calls himself a scientist in the video and chairs the House Science Committee's panel on investigations and oversight.
Quote:
"God's word is true. I've come to understand that. All that stuff I was taught about evolution and embryology and the big bang theory, all that is lies straight from the pit of Hell. And it's lies to try to keep me and all the folks who were taught that from understanding that they need a savior. You see, there are a lot of scientific data that I've found out as a scientist that actually show that this is really a young Earth. I don't believe that the earth's but about 9,000 years old. I believe it was created in six days as we know them. That's what the Bible says.
"And what I've come to learn is that it's the manufacturer's handbook, is what I call it. It teaches us how to run our lives individually, how to run our families, how to run our churches. But it teaches us how to run all of public policy and everything in society. And that's the reason as your congressman I hold the Holy Bible as being the major directions to me of how I vote in Washington, D.C., and I'll continue to do that."
This guy chairs the House Science Committee's panel on investigations and oversight? That is the height of irony, I don't want to bash Americans, but this is one of the reasons why the US is losing its place in the world order.

I am always amazed that people with the ability to dismiss science at this level can ascend to such lofty political heights.

I just don't understand how someone could read that without laughing.

It reminds me of when I try to reason with my 3 year old niece using logic

Naturally the freakin chair of a committee involved in science. How the hell did he get through medical school if he didn't actually believe in science?

Now here is something I really don't get about American politics...this guy has no Democratic opponent. None. He pretty much will be acclaimed to go back to the House. I can't imagine national political parties in Canada not running a candidate in every riding.

Are we really surprised anymore? Seems more like par for the course to me. We've already seen the religious right infiltrate all aspects of society in the US, including science.

I think some people will be surprised what percentage of the US population shares these views.

Funny how things like evolution become unpatriotic

If they are lies straight from the pit of hell, we should take notice. Afterall, if they are coming right from the top (bottom in this case) they are bound to be of a level of sophistication beyond the reason of us mere mortals.

Reading things like this always leave me with such a sinking feeling.

That is truly frightening. Sounds like the Christian version of a Sharia proponent.

The more and more the religious base in America gains a foothold, the more and more they will become like the countries they fear in the middle east. It's either funny or scary, I don't know which right now.

PZ meyers had a fascinating speech here in Iceland on the evolution of literalism in the US. What he was showing is that really this nearly half of the country believing in young earth creationism is very much a new thing, started nearly 100 years ago, but its evolution is fascinating.

Sorry our audio guy wasn't on the ball that night.
