Default Family held hostage in Winnipeg

http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/loc...170299726.html

Quote:
Although he was 18 at the time, the Free Press is not identifying him in order to publish details about his involvement with the justice system as a youth, which leads to questions about the type of supervision and treatment he received the community while he was being assessed.
The four victims -- a husband, wife, 17-year-old daughter and 15-year-old son -- suffered physical and emotional trauma. The accused selected them at random after following the daughter home on a city bus as part of a plan to rape, torture and possibly kill innocent people in an attempt "to become infamous," court was told. In writings seized by police, he referred to stalking his prey as the Hunting Game.
It appears that they are going to ask for Life for this POS.

That's a pretty awful experience for the victims involved . . . Glad he suffered extensive injuries when the family overpowered him. Watching your dad being stabbed repeatedly has got to put one in pure defense and survival mode, among other things this POS did.

Wow, that is awful. I can't imagine going through something this horrific. They are a changed family forever.

I hope they can heal one day.

That guy should suffer an "accident" while in jail and never see his trial where this victimized family will suffer again. This guy is a waste of air.
If the legal system was just this guy would get life.

From the interview I heard, it sounded like there was a publication ban. So although it is "old news" it is just starting to come out.

In the interview I heard, they are asking for life for this guy. However, according to the interviewee (journo that wrote the article) 'life" means possible parole in 7 years from the date of initial incarceration, which in this case was 2 years ago, so technically he could be out in 5.

I'd like more information on how badly he was hurt after the family subdued him. Hopefully it was worse than Christopher Cook got it.

Brave thinking by the son. Sometimes, in situations like those, I would imagine you 100% trust your instincts and somehow defend yourself if possible. If not, the situation could get worse.

If this accused was mentally disturbed, that is unfortunate and hopefully isn't some sort of cop out.

On a related note, why is it when people are mentally disturbed, they're linked to violence? Why can't a mentally disturbed person commit wanton acts of kindness and peaceful activity?

No it appears this was planned.

In writings seized by police, he referred to stalking his prey as the Hunting Game.
Police seized hundreds of computer documents, which included references to purchasing a torture kit and praise for well-known serial killers. Police also found images of raped and slain women from a reality website he frequented, stories he'd downloaded about incest, thousands of images of violent pornography and stories he'd written about targeting people he knew.
"This is an intelligent, articulate but extremely disturbed individual. He planned his final act for a very long time," Crown attorney Kusham Sharma told court Tuesday.

That doesn't mean he wasn't mentally disturbed (whatever that's defined as).

Correct, however in the interview I heard, there was mention of a previous arrest in May 2010. He claimed to hear voices. The again, the interveiwee (the journo) claims that the police have said this was a ruse.

From what I gather from the article it doesn't sound like it matters, he was found competent and then found guilty, so any mental health defense is long gone.

Stuff like this makes me glad that I have instructed my wife about what would happen if we were ever in such a situation, so there would be no misunderstanding when the time comes.

She thinks I am nuts for doing so, and she is probably right.
