Default Facebook Reports Chat to Winnipeg Police Leading to Sex Assault Charges

Great for them for doing so, but i guess their "chat" is not very private. Does google monitor Google Talk?

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Crime/20.../20111541.html

Police allege the suspect, aged 25, met and started communicating with a 13-year-old girl on the social networking site in mid-July. The messages turned sexual and were noticed by Facebook.
"Red flags were going up for them left, right and centre," Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
Police couldn't say exactly how Facebook caught on, or what the pair were chatting about.
"It was described as inappropriate activity," Michalyshen said. "There were conversations that could easily be described as explicit."

At some point, the pair arranged to meet and a sexual assault occurred, police said.

put your tin-foil hats on, i'm pretty much the only one of my buddies who does not have the great-satan-book. and i'm also the only one of my friends that still enjoys private talks with my minors.

Private? Why would anything you do online be truly private?

My Dad has worked for the phone company for years. Well before the days of the internet he would always say. "I wouldn't say anything on the telephone that I wouldn't yell out my front door". This applies to everything you do online as well.

CSIS has already been caught spying on Canadians over a decade ago when Chretien was Prime Minister. The surveillance building was in northern Ontario. There was a big story about it back then.

Private in what way? Is it not being transfered across a cellphone network (owned/operated by a third party), then being run through RIM's servers (another 3rd party) before being sent to your friend?

Unless you've built a 100% private LAN network (EG: two computers connected to eachother with no outside internet connection) just assume anything you type into an electronic device, for delivery is not private.

It might be encrypted, it might be password protected. It might be via proxy. But you're still relying on a number of 3rd party venders (EG: people not involved in the conversation) to deliver a message, thus it's not guaranteed it's 100% private.

This isn't to say you should be paranoid about being tracked, but just realize that somewhere along the chain, there's some one who could be listening, although in most cases they don't want to.
