Private in what way? Is it not being transfered across a cellphone network (owned/operated by a third party), then being run through RIM's servers (another 3rd party) before being sent to your friend?
Unless you've built a 100% private LAN network (EG: two computers connected to eachother with no outside internet connection) just assume anything you type into an electronic device, for delivery is not private.
It might be encrypted, it might be password protected. It might be via proxy. But you're still relying on a number of 3rd party venders (EG: people not involved in the conversation) to deliver a message, thus it's not guaranteed it's 100% private.
This isn't to say you should be paranoid about being tracked, but just realize that somewhere along the chain, there's some one who could be listening, although in most cases they don't want to.
