What do you do with old cell phones
I seem to have a dozen or so older Blackberries lying around and was wondering what everyone else does with the old ones. Some are almost brand new but didn't work properly out of the box so Telus sent new ones but never wants the old ones back. Part of me wants to keep them for parts as we use the phones in the field and they are always breaking, but aside from the battery the phones aren't as easy to swap parts on as they once were.
As well, we end up with dozens of usb mini chargers and mini usb cables. It seems wrong to just throw them out. But they ship one with every phone so after you have one in your home, car and office what do you do with the rest.
Any thoughts?

Most cell phone stores will accept used phones to properly recycle them. Throwing them out isn't the best idea.

Throw them at hobo's.
Not only do you get to be entertained, but the hobo gets something he can sell for some cash.
Win win

Donate the working phones to the women's shelter. They might be able to use chargers as well, I don't know.
You don't need a SIM card or active plan to dial 911.

Yeah kijiji, worst case if you can't sell them then put them up for free, they'll be gone within hours, and you don't have the throw-away-guilt.

Throw them out your sunroof driving down Deerfoot. Makes for an awesome show!
Bring it into a Bell, Telus or Rogers store. I know Bell takes them for sure and they give them to womens shelters around Canada, I'm sure the rest do something similar.

Put them in a microwave that you have no further use for.
Stand back and enjoy the show.

If you can't trade them in for anything most cell stores will take them in for recycling.
We did that all the time at the one I used to work at.
EDIT: Beaten to it. But yeah, especially the battery, not a good thing to have in the landfill.

That's what I always do, but then I'm always left with the inevitable question of what to do with the blown up microwave.

You put it in a bigger microwave.

1.) Spend a few hours trying to get the precious metals out of them.
2.) Sell the precious metals.
3.) Use your hard earned money to buy a five-cent candy or three.

I still have an LG Bliss.
I would gladly take the newest Blackberry in the bunch off your hands.

I'm not sure why, but they accept old phones at the gorilla enclosure at the zoo.

I keep them in my own personal outdated tech museum. It'll be fun to show my kids my first dumb phone when they've got a phone implanted in their brain or something.

An old microwave is a perfectly decent Faraday cage. I put all the old tech in there for when the next mega solar storm comes. Or an EMP blast. Not sure what to do with the working phone after the blast, but I'll worry about that then.
Another option is to put them in your car with a charger. 911 always should work even without a plan.

Or donate them to the only men's shelter in Canada...
Women shelters 500 million/year funding in Canada.
Men shelters - 0...
