Harper Government tells Canada's three oceans to go eff themselves.
The Harper Government has decided the oceans can bloody well look after themselves and has reduced the Department of Fisheries and Oceans contaminants monitoring program to a total of five (5) scientists scattered across the country.

The end result is the Harper Government will have essentially no capability to monitor marine contamination and will instead rely on industry-sponsored and academic studies for its information.
Bravo.

This move surprises me. I was expecting Harper to be a responsible steward of our ecosystem.

Really can't say I'm surprised. I've become numb to his complete disregard to social and environmental issues.
It's unfortunate that he was elected at a time when the economy was at the forefront of everyone's minds. They elected a Prime Minister who promised economic stability.
Should we expect anything other than economic stability from a Conservative government?
EDIT - Funny and informative website for anyone who disagrees that Harper doesn't give two ####s about social and environmental issues: http://####harperdid.ca/

Like I've said before, people were not scared of Harper's "hidden agenda". They didn't like his "agenda". It is clear that the Conservatives are the economy first, second and third and the environment finishes dead last. And enough Canadians were okay with this they they elected the Conservatives to a majority government. I think if you ask the average Joe if he is okay with the government not spending money to regulate ocean contaminants, they'd be fine with that.

Well yeah....Protecting oceans is stupid. Putting people in jail for 5 years minimum for victimless crimes, now thats a policy we need to pursue goddamn it!

#### like this really GMG because you could say that for probably 90% of government spending.
It's so short sided and stupid it hurts my brain that people think this way.

Aww, how cute. Elizabeth May thinks she matters.
I guess the question is... can acadamia do a better job of research and monitoring than the government does? Is the $1.4 million annually that the government will spend funding such academics be enough? What level of overlap existed between the government agency and outside researchers? Or, in short, will we actually lose anything out of this, or is this just more mindless anti-Harper diaper spoiling?

It's refreshing to see the actual reduction of government in this country. All we ever see is more committees and more departments added but never a reduction.
It's good to see a government having the courage to look at different departments and find ways to reduce government waste.
