Default Dogs and Chocolate

Just a reminder for all you dog/kid owners that dogs and chocolate are not like chocolate and peanut butter...

Our 100lb dog just ate 100g of milk chocolate...which I think will be minor (I'm just checking with the vet now)...but thought others might benefit from my carelessness

Cats, although much less likely to consume chocolate, also do not mix well with it.

The darker the chocolate the more damage it does.

This should cover all remedial steps should your dog consume chocolate:

**Does not cover any remedial steps should your dog consume chocolate.

Should be fine, hopefully, as milk chocolate is pretty weak in the toxin's concentration since its so processed.
If it ate 100g of cocoa nibs, Id be worried. Growing up my 15lb Bichon at a 500g Toblerone and was fine.

Halloween 2007 my Chesapeake (105 Lbs.) ate an entire heaping bowl of halloween candy including the wrappers.

We were worried, but he seemed fine, as he had been home alone for a few hours when/after he ate the candy, so we let him be, and he digested every single bit of it no problem and still wanted to go to the park for over an hour and chase the ball around.

I swear, he coulda eaten anything...I guess some dogs just have no issue, i don't know.

The medical danger is greatly overblown for dogs, when it concerns ingestion of milk chocolates. It's baker's chocolate, that has more than 10x the theobromine of candy, that poses a real and significant risk.

If a dog scarfs down a couple easter chocolates that you bought at the drug store, its highly unlikely to result in anything other than an upset tummy.

When I was about 8, my parents thought it would be fun to put chocolate bells on our Christmas tree. We woke on Christmas morning to find that our beagle had eaten 14 of the bells. She would have eaten more, but being a beagle, she couldn't reach the higher ones. She had a tummy ache that day, but hey, after eating 14 chocolate bells, I probably would have had a tummy ache. A day later the dog was no worse for wear and we didn't bother taking her to the vet as she seemed perfectly fine.

Yeah that sounds like a Beagle alright. They're entire existence is to be loved and fed.

Thanks all...I'm sure she'll be fine...maybe if she ate 30 times the amount of milk choc we'd have something to really worry about.

What would you cover your private parts with chocolate? Everyone knows it's more convenient to do it with peanut butter.

A typical 20 kg (44 lb) dog will normally experience intestinal distress after eating less than 240 g (8.5 oz) of dark chocolate, but won't necessarily experience bradycardia or tachyarrhythmia unless it eats at least half a kilogram (1.1 lb) of milk chocolate. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, approximately 1.3 g of baker's chocolate per kilogram of a dog's body weight (0.02 oz/lb) is sufficient to cause symptoms of toxicity.

So you can't really go by the weight alone, it's very much dependant on what the dog consumes.

My ex gf`s dalmatian at a whole chocolate cake once. Climbed up on to the table it was on and gobbled it right up. She was only alone for a couple minutes.

Dog was fine, just took a giant crap on the living room carpet that I had to clean up

My black Lab ate 6g of mushrooms from my sisters room when we were gone for a night... I wish I had cameras in my house... She must have had a hell of a night alone in the house. She was fine when we got home the next day though.
