Man sues couple he held hostage
i'm really not sure what's worse - this story or fact that that is doesn't really surprise me
Quote:
A man who held a Kansas couple hostage in their home while fleeing from authorities is suing them, claiming that they broke an oral contract made when he promised them money in exchange for hiding him from police. The couple has asked a judge to dismiss the suit.
....
"I, the defendant, asked the Rowleys to hide me because I feared for my life. I offered the Rowleys an unspecified amount of money which they agreed upon, therefore forging a legally binding oral contract," Dimmick said in his hand-written court documents. He wants $235,000, in part to pay for the hospital bills that resulted from him being shot by police when they arrested him.

You can try to sue anything in most countries.
In some countries you just have a better chance of actually seeing your case go to court and winning.

If this stuff interests you I would suggest you watch the movie "Hot Coffee".

I'll wait for one of the lawyers to confirm this; but I seem to recall the one law class I didn't sleep through was that you cannot enter a legal contract to do an illegal thing.

It probably says something that my first thought was that this was in BC.

You can sue for anything here as well. All you have to do is pay the court fee, which I believe is around 100$ to have your claim filed. Suing someone is completely different than having a valid case against someone.

As others have already mentioned, you can try to sue someone for anything. I can't see there being any chance that this ridiculous claim isn't dismissed immediately by a judge before it even goes to trial.

Did Dimmick actually pay the couple the money he had promised them? Maybe they didn't hide him because they didn't get their money.
The whole thing is ridiculous.

Yep. The Courts will not reward you for an illegal act. At least not here.

Pretty much, I'm sure there are grey areas but this would not be one of them. It is Kansas though, so who knows.

And as I recall from the one law class I didnt sleep through, was that oral contracts arent worth the paper they're written on.
